“In Your Eyes”, an art fundraiser at Santini Gallery, features original paintings and fine art prints by local artist Anita Utas. Animal Justice’s executive director Camille Labchuk and communications manager Shannon Milling will be in attendance. Animal Justice is a national organization that leads the legal fight for animals in Canada. Animal Justice lawyers work to pass strong new animal protection legislation, push for the prosecution of animal abusers, and fight for animals in court.
Artist’s statement: “From 1970 to 2014, half (451 of 903) of monitored wildlife species in Canada declined in abundance. In the past 40 years, the Earth has lost more than half of its wildlife. For me, it is important to raise the status of animals so that animal issues are brought to the attention of the public. With this new series of larger-than-life portrait paintings, I aim to capture the essence of each animal. Their gaze draws us in and we connect…the direct and piercing stare of an owl, the wary look of the coyote, the gentle gaze of a bear – they ask us to consider them as beings with complex thoughts and feelings. What do you see in their eyes? What do they see in ours?”
