20+ new shows taped at Harold Shenkman Hall begin airing on June 11 via YouTube

Season 2 of the Encore Ottawa concert series opens with a 2-hour special on Rogers TV and YouTube, featuring singles from each of the 23 artists who taped sets behind closed doors at the Shenkman Arts Centre.

Highlights of the Season 2 lineup include the 2x Juno Award-winning blues band MonkeyJunk, Ottawa singer-songwriter Lynne Hanson, multi-instrumentalist Catriona Sturton, classical pianist John Kofi Dapaah, international touring folk act Jessica Pearson & The East Wind, the 2x Capital Music Award nominees Double Experience, and the Miguel de Armas Quartet featuring original compositions by Havana-born, Ottawa-based jazz pianist Miguel de Armas.

They’re joined by Kimberly Sunstrum, Kristine St-Pierre, Renée Landry, Orchidae, Pithra, Rachel Beausoleil, Rory Taillon, Sophie d’Orléans, Chantal Hackett, Emma Lamontagne, Five+None, Gutta King Chris, MaCMuwsA, Robynn Simone, The Riot Police, and Uvaune, in the Season 2 lineup which involves more than 60 musicians in 23 acts from start to finish.

Following the June 11 online premiere, Rogers TV will broadcast full 30-minute concerts in weekly doubleheaders from June 18 to September 3.

The number of acts featured in Season 2 brings the Encore Ottawa series total to 39 complete concerts taped at the Shenkman Arts Centre since COVID-19 began affecting Ottawa. In response to the necessary COVID-19 safety regulations which effectively shut down the live music industry, OMIC partnered with the Shenkman Arts Centre and Rogers TV to launch the virtual concert series in 2020.

Each of these video showcases were recorded in front of 500 empty seats at the east-end performing arts venue. The artists performed for a small camera crew with support of the venue’s pro technical staff backstage and in the wings. A page of production safety notes describes how the Rogers TV camera crew used cranes and robotic cameras to shoot the performers from a distance.

“I’m so proud to be part of Encore Ottawa,” says singer-songwriter Kimberly Sunstrum. “It felt so good to be on a beautiful stage belting out tunes in full force. I can’t wait to tune in to see all of Season 2.”

The public is invited to join the artists on YouTube for the Official Watch Party and live chat on June 11 at 8pm.
