Dominion City hosts candidates debate—09.15.19

By Hannah Manning on September 15, 2019

This fall, Canadians will return to the polls and Dominion City Brewing Co. wants to make sure you cast an informed vote. On Sunday September 15, they are hosting a Meet Your Candidates Night for their riding of Ottawa-Vanier.

Elections Canada has the official description of the riding, but generally speaking, it covers Beacon Hill North, Cardinal Glen, Carson Grove, Castle Heights, Cyrville, Forbes, Lindenlea, Lowertown, Manor Park, New Edinburgh, Overbrook, Pineview, Quarries, Rockcliffe Park, Sandy Hill, Rothwell Heights, Vanier and Viscount Alexander Park.

The brewery, which just celebrated its fifth birthday, has always been about community engagement. Their birthday party included three special new release beers that benefit the community, a panel discussion on collaboration, and a human library hosted by Refugee 613.

We’re big believers that our community is richer and stronger when those of us who live here are engaged and take charge of it.—Josh McJannett

When asked why they’re hosting a debate, Dominion City’s Josh McJannett said that “we think that when we’re at our best Dominion City can be a place where our people come together. We’re big believers that our community is richer and stronger when those of us who live here are engaged and take charge of it. Creating an opportunity for our community to gather at the brewery to meet the people vying to represent us in the next parliament felt like a natural thing to do.”

Candidates from the four major parties have confirmed their participation and will stand on a beer crate in the taproom. They’ll have no more than three minutes to introduce themselves and their ideas. Afterwards, you’ll have your chance to ask questions, make your voice heard and get informed as candidates work the taproom. Josh says they’ve had good feedback about the low-key, conversational format. “I think people are hungry for an opportunity to better understand the ideas and personalities vying to represent them and we can’t think of a better way to have those conversations than over a beer.”

To learn more about the candidates ahead of time, visit the event page on Facebook where Dominion City has been posting candidate profiles. According to Josh, “everyone is welcome. We’re looking forward to hosting a respectful and engaging evening and we hope it’s a useful opportunity for the community and the candidates alike.” Cheers to that.

Dominion City Brewing Co. is located at 15-5510 Canotek Road. The event will take place from 7-9pm. There is parking available on-site, as well as bike racks. All are welcome.
