Who ever said Ottawa isn’t a fun city either is not from around here or hasn’t stepped outdoors in years. With numerous outdoor activities year round, too many to count festivals and concerts, and the brand new fresh-off-the-assembly-line Light Rail Transit… the world is your oyster my friend!
But wait, it gets even better, because if you thought there was nothing to do between now and Halloween, then I’ve got news for you. Two of Ottawa’s hilarious comics, Nick Burden and Matt Santos, have decided to bring the Comedy Festival Circuit to our backyard with their aptly named Dirty Bird Comedy Festival. This is a “for locals by locals” celebration of live stand up comedy. For those of you that think binge watching the latest set of stand up specials makes you a comedy connoisseur, then think again. There is no substitute for the live experience. There’s something to be said about the mood the comic carries to the stage, the mindset you’re in during the show, and the simple yet effective setting that a lone mic stand, direct lighting, and open stage bring to a unique yet ever temporary experience.
Nick and Matt are bringing a bevy of heavy hitters in the Canadian comedy world and combining them with local talent to showcase 7 touring headliners, in 9 shows, over 3 days. The 7 main performers are: Rebecca Reeds (SiriusXM, Fox, CBC), Nick Reynoldson (JFL, NXNE, CBC), Paul Thomson (TV’s Wishbone, JFL), Carol Zoccoli (JFL, CBC, Second City), Danny Martinello (CTV, CBC, NBC), Nigel Grinstead (NXNE, JFL), Sunee Dhaliwal (SiriusXM, CTV, JFL). Every one of these headliners are a home grown talent and I encourage you to visit the festival website to read up on each comic and watch a video of their standup to see which one(s) you’d like to see live.
On Thursday October 17th, you can catch Colour Commentary at Overflow Brewing, Roast Battles at Live! On Elgin, and Laughgasms at Mulligans Golf Bar.

As a fan of comedy, I am excited about the Dirty Bird Comedy Festival because it offers a wide range of comedy shows right on my doorstep. So get your friends together, hire a babysitter, book a dog walker, invite a cat sitter, or do whatever you need to do in order to free up your evening and enjoy a few laughs over some pints of locally brewed beer.
