A community sewing hub at Fabrications

By Livia Belcea on March 6, 2017

With spring just around the corner, new shops, stores and specialized services are sprouting all along Wellington West in Hintonburg, and pleasing residents with new opportunities to rediscover this vibrant and unique neighbourhood.

At first glance walking by Fabrications, an established fabric boutique and sewing studio located at 1018 Wellington West, it may not be obvious that there’s something new about the store. But it’s worth taking a second look and discovering what has changed. Though the name has remained the same, earlier this year, Catherine Fournier and Faustina Konkal, a mother-daughter entrepreneur team, took ownership of Fabrications and are giving the boutique a new life.

Sewing has always been a part of both Catherine and Faustina’s lives, having made clothing, quilts and household items for their children, family, friends and for themselves. When the occasion came to purchase the store and carry on its vision, they knew it was the right move for their careers and passion.

Upon entering the fabric boutique and sewing studio, it is clear that the warm and welcoming space is ideal for sewing enthusiasts, lovers of fabrics and DIY types. Fabrications prides itself in the unique and sometimes unusual fabrics and patterns. Hot items like unicorn, kraken and llama prints sell out fast. They also specialize in rare Japanese fabrics, which you wouldn’t find elsewhere, as well fabrics for casual apparel like denim, terries and bright, quirky, modern cottons.

But what really sets Fabrications apart is the community that has grown out of sharing a love of sewing with others. On any given night, beginner to advanced sewing classes are offered on site, and range from simple one day sewing projects (such as scarves and bags) to complex dress making workshops.

Catherine explains that classes are more than just an opportunity to make an item to take home. She emphasizes that we need to honour the fact that people come in all shapes and sizes, and that making an item to fit one’s body and style, on their own, not only has clients leaving with a functional and durable item, but also with a strong sense of accomplishment and independence.

Catherine and Faustina believe that anyone can sew, and have tailored their classes to positively instill their passion for clothes, fabrics and sewing. They also facilitate the rental of sewing machines, and stock a variety of patterns and sewing necessities.

The mother-daughter duo have only recently taken ownership of the shop, but already have big plans. They intend on extending their unique fabric selection on an online store, but also developing new sewing workshops, such as a lingerie and bra making introduction class.

Fabrications is located at 1018 Wellington Street West, in the heart of Hintonburg. Follow the shop on Instagram and Facebook for a colourful daily updates of their latest fabric selections and sewing projects.
