Each May for the past eight years, Ottawa’s Chinatown has come alive for a celebration of the arts – Chinatown Remixed. What began as an initiative of the Somerset Business Improvement Association (BIA), the month long event paired local artists with local businesses in which to display their work. The festival kicks off with a giant party where people mill up and down Somerset Street, checking out the music, installations, and art, all the while enjoying some delicious food and drink.

Now in its eighth year, Chinatown Remixed is switching things up. At the beginning of this year, the Somerset BIA announced that they would be withdrawing their financial support of the festival and, unfortunately, they did not receive a grant from the City of Ottawa for which they applied. Despite the news, however, those who have dedicated their time and efforts to Chinatown Remixed since its beginnings were determined to continue what has become one of Ottawa’s most exciting events.

In order to continue such an amazing Ottawa arts showcase, Chinatown Remixed would need to come up with the budget for the festival themselves and, what better way to do that than to do what they do best – throw a giant party! Chinatown PREmixed will be happening this Saturday, June 6th, in Shanghai’s parking lot.

ChinatownTrue to form, Chinatown Premixed promises to be a great time. There will be beats, eats, beers, ping pong, and – of course – art! There will be both live painting and an art auction at the event, as well as a selection of Remixed swag. All proceeds from the event will go towards continuing Chinatown Remixed for another great year this September.

This year’s Chinatown Remixed will not be as large of a festival as it was last year, however, you can still expect for it to be an awesome time. Remixed will continue to be a community-driven celebration of the local arts scene, in its many forms. This year’s festival will be one of renewal and change, as it evolves and continues to support the wonderful talent we have here in this city.

If you want to get involved with the festival, or offer ideas or suggestions, please contact the organizing committee at chinatownremixed.ca. The callout for artists to participate in Chinatown Remixed can be expected this June.
