City Hall brings on free summer fun at Marion Dewar Plaza

By Gabrielle Tieman on July 8, 2013

Summer in Ottawa usually rings a few familiar bells – Bluesfest, Jazz Fest, Fringe Festival, Canada Day and all of those great ticket-bearing events in-between.

But what about the events that don’t drain our hard earned paychecks and still leave us with a fulfillment that can only come from a great time out in the sun?

This summer, City Hall will be packed to the brim with free weekly events at Marion Dewar Plaza and running until the end of August. Feeling active? An outdoor boot camp with the YMCA – YWCA and Hatha Yoga taught by Rama Lotus Yoga Centre will give people of all fitness levels a reason to get out and sweat every Tuesday until August 27.

Leaning towards something a little more leisurely? Tuesdays will also boast a pop-up library brought on by the Ottawa Public Library – carrying everything from e-books to downloadable music and paperback classics. While you’re browsing for books, why not shop a little? The summer art market will pair local artisans and crafters in an outdoor bazaar featuring paintings, jewelry, clothing and photography.

You’ll be able to liven up those slow hump day nights with outdoor salsa lessons from some of the best dance schools in the city. And if you want to learn more hip shaking moves, come back Thursday morning for a high-energy cardio dance class by Pow Wow Pump.

Ottawa Chamberfest will continue its popular series of free festival programming on August 1, filling the atrium of City Hall with The Element Choir Project and horn and wind players.

And this is only the tip of the iceberg – head over to the city’s Special Events Calendar to get the details on the other free events happening throughout the summer.
