Catch a Caroler on your street—12.12.20–12.20.20

By Laura Gauthier and Samara Caplan on December 9, 2020

Laura and Samara spend their days as non-profit unicorns and fill every spare minute exploring the world of musical theatre as BFFs (that’s Broadway Friends Forever). Follow @bffs613 on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.

What if we told you that you could keep up your Christmas caroling tradition, support out-of-work Ottawa theatre artists and a great charity, and even have the chance to win a prize—all while being COVID-safe?

BFFs, you’d say, that’s not possible!

Well, Ottawa friends, you would be wrong. Because our very creative and innovative theatre community has many a trick up their sleeve! That’s right: Bear & Co. have combined competition, community-building, charity, and holiday cheer with their Catch a Caroler event this holiday season.

From December 12 to 20, Bear & Co. will send solo carolers out to various streets to serenade the neighbourhood—you can come listen at your door or from your windows at a safe distance. Carolers will sing for a one-hour period between 6 and 8:30 p.m. along a street in a residential neighbourhood. Be sure to email Bear & Co. when you’ve “caught” a caroler in your area and you coul win a pair of tickets to one of their upcoming shows (once live theatre resumes)!

But wait, there’s more! Anyone can commission a caroler to come visit their street as well. 80 per cent of the proceeds will benefit the actors, who are out of work due to the pandemic, along with a 10 per cent going to the Snowsuit Fund and 10 per cent to Bear & Co. to support their theatre development for when shows resume.

Is there any better way to rev up your holiday season than with holiday tunes, prizes, and a chance to give back!? For all the theatre companies that have supported us through this theatre intermission (#JustAnIntermission) this is our chance as a community to give them the support they need in return and to ensure that when theatre does come back, it comes back stronger than ever. As our favourite maple syrup-filled elf once said, “the best way to spread Christmas cheer, is singing loud for all to hear.” (Elf, 2003)

Catch a Caroler runs from December 12 to 20 across Ottawa. Check their Facebook page for updates on where they’re headed, their email address if you spot a caroler, to book your own caroler, to support Bear & Co. or to donate to the Snowsuit Fund.
