A new initiative from visual artist Aquil Virani is looking for artwork from local Muslim artists to compile into an anthology titled Ottawa Inshallah, with an open call to submissions until May 22.
The bilingual anthology is being created by Virani, with support from the City of Ottawa’s Diversity in the Arts fund. Virani is a Canadian artist born in Vancouver whose visual art has gained widespread press coverage, noted for its artistic quality and activist stance.
His immigrant Catholic-Muslim heritage is a frequent topic in his artwork, as can be seen in his call for the Ottawa Inshallah anthology.
“Our creativity knows no bounds. During a time of Islamophobic hate and ignorance, Ottawa Inshallah presents our collective vision for a better future. A just future where we thrive. A beautiful future where we blossom. A glorious future where we transcend and resist and continue to assert our right to be represented on our own terms,” said Virani.
The open call for submissions is for any visual medium that can fit on a page—photography, visual art, poetry; the sky’s the limit.
