Call for nominations: Capital Music Awards—deadline Mar. 31

By Greggory Clark on March 8, 2021

Inaugurated in 2020, the Capital Music Awards recognize artists and members of the #ottmusic community who contribute to Ottawa’s music scene. Members of the Ottawa Music Industry Coalition (OMIC) are invited to nominate artists for the annual awards—although local artists do not have to be OMIC members in order to be nominated or win the prize.

Nominations are due on March 31. The winners will be announced during a digital broadcast of the Capital Music Awards on April 29.

Last year’s winners included Le Group Swing in three categories (Song of the Year, Band of the Year, Video of the Year), Jasmine Trails, Anna Ludlow, and Spitten Image.

The Awards

  • Single of the Year: For a song of any genre released between April 1, 2020 and March 31, 2021
  • Album of the Year: For a full-length album or EP released between April 1, 2020 and March 31, 2021
  • Artist of the Year: For a solo artist who has released new music between April 1, 2020 and March 31, 2021.
  • Group of the Year: For a group of 2 or more members who released new music between April 1, 2020 and March 31, 2021.
  • Video of the Year: For a music video released between April 1, 2020 and March 31, 2021.
  • Best Production and Arrangements: For a team or individual who has demonstrated excellence in the production of an album released between April 1, 2020 and March 31, 2021.
  • Impact Award: Given to a person or organization who has had the greatest impact on the Ottawa music community between April 1, 2020 and March 31, 2021.
  • Virtual Performance of the Year: For a group or individual who the public feels adapted effectively to the global pandemic, demonstrating their versatility by performing and/or producing a virtual concert between April 1, 2020 and March 31, 2021.

Three of eight categories will be decided by a public vote. Voting will take place between April 1–14 for Single of the Year, Video of the Year, and Virtual Performance of the Year.

Recipients of the Album of the Year, Artist of the Year, Group of the Year, Impact Award, and Best Production and Arrangements, will be selected by an independent jury.
