Call for artists: Parkdale Park Art Wall

By Apartment613 on July 20, 2021

The Wellington West BIA is seeking artists to create outdoor public art murals on the Parkdale Park Art Wall. Artists will be invited to work in public in the park on a mobile panel, which can then be displayed in the park, and possibly “adopted” by local businesses for permanent installation and display in the neighbourhood.

But it all starts at the Art Wall. This public structure, located next to the Parkdale Market in Hintonburg’s Parkdale Park, was originally the brainchild of well-known local artist Daniel Martelock. Since 2019, the Wellington West BIA has been running the Art Wall program with Martelock to give young emerging artists from a range of backgrounds an opportunity to try their hands at creating public mural art without all the hassle of negotiating to secure their own empty wall on private property.

“This summer we’re very pleased to expand this program,” says 2021 program producer and artist Kseniya Tsoy in an email to Apt613. She says the Art Wall organizers are issuing an open call for art that responds to this year’s theme: TOGETHER.

Explaining the choice for this theme, Tsoy says, “After so many dark months of isolation, this summer is finally a time when our neighbours can begin gathering in public again.”

Artists are encouraged to propose their ideas that interpret the TOGETHER theme however they’d like. The full call for submissions includes a handful of prompts.

This year’s Art Wall program kicks off with a launch event Wednesday, Jul. 21. The event will feature two community artists Melanie Yugo and Kseniya Tsoy, who will start painting in the park accompanied by music from DJ Jason Skilz and Nayana Bhatnagar as the weekly Parkdale Night Market opens at 4pm

Save the dates Aug. 18, Sept. 8, and Sept. 29 for the live painting events! One last event will take place in October (on an undetermined date) to celebrate all of the new artworks.
