By Samara Caplan and Laura Gauthier on December 11, 2018

By Samara Caplan and Laura Gauthier. Laura and Samara spend their days as non-profit unicorns and fill every spare minute exploring the world of musical theatre as BFFs (that’s Broadway Friends Forever).

Have you ever wanted to stand centre stage and break out into a perfectly choreographed number to a sold out theatre of adoring fans? Well, we may not be able to guarantee that’s in your future, but you can get your heart rate up, your musical theatre fix and reach your dream of perfect coordination – with no dance experience required through this event. Take just one hour out of your day and Fosse your way to fitness with the Broadway Workout, all while supporting a good cause.

You can get your heart rate up, your musical theatre fix and reach your dream of perfect coordination – with no dance experience required through this event.

Laura Allardyce, the creative genius behind this workout event, shared how this idea came into fruition. Back in March, Laura auditioned for the Orpheus Production of Mamma Mia.

“The dance audition was very cardio intense and I remember it being a lot of fun and thinking this should be something you can do weekly to stay in shape,” says Laura.

After spending a few months chatting to some of her theatre loving friends, she realized that other people would be interested in this workout too. So she decided she was going to do it. She found a choreographer, a space to have it in and set up a Facebook page and event and began sending invites.

Want to know what you can expect from this new workout experience? We talked to the choreographer and class instructor Dani Corbishley.

I want every person who attends to want to come back and do it again, because I know that I certainly will.—Dani Corbishley, choreograph

“First, know that WE will sweat! (BRING WATER!) Seriously, I’ll probably sweat the most. I don’t teach without putting my all into it. So, obviously there will be a lot of movement. We’ll dance, we’ll mess up, we’ll try to sing along, we’ll mess up some more, we’ll laugh, we’ll learn from each other, and we’ll sweat. But above all, we’ll have FUN! What’s the point if it’s no fun? I want every person who attends to want to come back and do it again, because I know that I certainly will,” says Dani.

Laura and Dani are starting with just one scheduled session of the Broadway Workout—and tickets are already 50% sold out—so make sure to get your tickets before it’s too late!

All proceeds from the event will go to the Alliance for African Women Initiative which is an organization that supports women and girls in Ghana. It has a Canadian branch that fundraises and supports the original Ghanaian organization which has been around for years. All fundraising will be used to host workshops for women entrepreneurs, nurturing knowledge and promoting health and better business practices. It will also support disadvantaged children to ensure they are able to attend school, including fees, health care, uniforms and school supplies.

Broadway Workout is at Studio X Ottawa (250 City Centre Avenue, unit 122) on Thursday, December 13th at 7pm. The class lasts one hour and tickets are $15.
