By Samara Caplan and Laura Gauthier. Laura and Samara spend their days as non-profit unicorns and fill every spare minute exploring the world of musical theatre as BFFs (that’s Broadway Friends Forever).
Let’s be honest, the day Broadway Across Canada announces their new season is probably our favourite day of the year (we’re nerds, we accept it). So after weeks of conversations around what shows we thought might show up in the 2020/2021 season our questions were finally answered. They announced four shows that will be coming to Ottawa starting in October, and for the first time, a fifth show which will be a “season option”.
Wicked (August 26 – September 6, 2020)
Wicked is the newly introduced “season option”, which is a fifth show (not included in the four-show season package) where tickets are only available to subscription holders as a subscriber perk.
Based on a book of the same name, which is based on The Wizard of Oz, Wicked tells the untold story of the witches of Oz. With music and lyrics from Stephen Schwartz, the original Broadway cast included Idina Menzel as Elphaba and Kristin Chenoweth as Glinda. The show-stopping songs like “Defying Gravity” and “For Good” will change the way you see the classic tale and will make you think a lot more about what happened before Dorothy dropped in.
Anastasia (October 27, 2020 – November 1, 2020)
Inspired by the film, Anastasia takes us through a transformative time in the Russian Empire, through to 1920 Paris. With the help of some slightly shady (but good-hearted) characters, Anya journeys to discover more about her past and finding her family. Featuring a few favourite tunes from the 1997 film, along with stunning period costumes Anastasia will take you on a heartwarming “Journey to the Past”.
Fiddler on the Roof (December 29, 2020 – January 3, 2021)
Fiddler on the Roof tells the story of a small town steeped in tradition. As families grow older and grow bigger they maneuver their way through change and the challenges placed on their traditions. This classic is an audience favourite filled with heart that has managed to stay timely throughout generations.
Dear Evan Hansen (April 27, 2021 – May 2, 2021)
After the meaning behind a personal letter gets mistaken, Evan Hansen’s lie continues to grow and become more complicated. For a boy who has always felt alone, telling the truth gets more and more difficult when he finally starts to feel like he fits in. Music and lyrics by Pasek and Paul (La La Land, The Greatest Showman, Dogfight) Dear Evan Hansen is a moving story that reminds audiences that they are never alone.
Mean Girls (June 8, 2021 – June 13, 2021)
Cady Heron, after growing up and being homeschooled in Kenya moves to Illinois where she is launched into high school and teenaged girl world. Based on Tina Fey’s popular 2004 film, the show analyzes teenage culture and challenges the types of relationships girls can have with each other. A newer musical on its first tour, this show is bound to be one that is so fetch!
