Bluesfest: New Swears garage punk

By Apartment613 on July 10, 2015

Ottawa’s full-throttle party band New Swears don’t really care what people think of them. As they sing in their song “Main Stream”:

And some band already did that /
    we don’t really give a shit /
We’re just having way too much fun /
    to care about the bullshit.

As one local critic has noted, this FU attitude can be easily classified as punk or garage, although it only tells half the story.  With last year’s release of Junkfood Forever, Bedtime Whateverthe band gleefully released its crazy ode to being goonish, albeit with some catchy melodies.

While it’s true that the group can be obnoxious, (an attempt to interview New Swears via email failed as their written answers were pure gibberish), they can also write some really good songs, as evidenced by their solid track TV Shows.

In short, seeing this garage-punk outfit is like having lunch with the late (and notoriously drunk) Charles Bukowski: flashes of brilliance, lots of boorish behaviour, a complete sense of freedom, and an experience unlike any other.

The New Swears play Bluesfest on Tuesday, July 14 at 6:00 pm on the Canadian Stage.  For ticket information you can go to the online Bluesfest ticket site.
