For the third year in a row, Apartment613 has won GOLD for “Best Community News Website” at the Canadian Online Publishing Awards. We’re out here reflecting Ottawa’s true local identities, and trying to recognize the folks who make this city awesome, so that’s one for all y’all! We have published 6,839 blog posts about you (and counting).
It’s an outstanding achievement we’re proud to share between 300+ contributors to the site since 2009. Our contributors (see a list here) are the most generous writers, filmmakers, photographers and editors Ottawa is lucky to have. Everybody volunteers their time and talents to this project.
Apartment613 was started in 2008 by a group of friends who found it remarkable that although Ottawa has an active local arts and culture scene, you really need to know what you’re looking for, or know the right people to get involved. They decided to do something about it. Following a mooonths-long debate over a serif or sans serif font for the Apt613 logo, the official website went live in 2009. There was a launch party on 6/13 at Raw Sugar (R.I.P.) — the first of many 613 Day parties and birthday celebrations.
We hope apt613.ca will continue to grow as a platform for participation and community building. Everyone is welcome, so come on over! If you’d like to help out, please visit our contact page to find out how you can get involved.
