Tuesday is a quiet day at Bluesfest, but there’s a special event taking place at Casino Lac-Leamy as part of the Bluesfest activities at the Marina Bar of the casino. Versatile artist Joshua Earth is playing the Marina Bar. This talented musician has been at it for over two decades now and has a sound all to his own.
Discover Joshua Earth and his musical journey below.
How would you describe your sound?
My sound I would say is a blend of cultures. So a world music sound. Influences include Reggae/Blues/Folk/Pop/Rock/World. The sound is soothing, danceable, thought provoking, infectious groove, wailing elements.
How long have you been playing music, and how has your sound evolved over that time?
I have been playing music for 21 years now. I started with guitar songs, campfire songs and jamming. I actually performed an original song just 2 months after buying my first guitar for my high school. I always liked doing my thing on it musically and lyrically. A couple years later I bought an electric guitar and started jamming with a band. About at the 5-6 year mark I began to be interested in djembe drum music from West Africa and for the next 2-3 years guitar became my second instrument. I then started to play both equally and eventually came back to the guitar as my first instrument.
All this being said the most recent new music I have picked up has been the blues. I always wanted to be different and that is why my musical path led me that way from open tuning gypsy style acoustic to reggae roots and African music. I have played in a Zimbabwean band/ Jamaican Gospel/ many Reggae bands and have taught West African percussion for many years. All of this combined with where I was raised and influenced as a Canadian is now coming to fruition.
What are you hoping to get out of your Bluesfest performance? Fans, adoration, festival experience etc?
I am hoping to get as much exposure as possible from this Bluesfest performance. I have had festival experience and it is my favourite venue to play. I am hoping this new sound will break new ground here in Ottawa and that we can bring this joyfull sound to all music festivals near and far. Of course gaining fans along the way is much appreciated. I do want to get back in the studio so they can listen to Joshua Earth music at home or wherever. As always I hope people have a great time dancing and listening to us but I also hope it makes them think a little about the state of our world and how we can all help make it the best it can be.
Are there any other bands on the bill you’re excited to see?
Oh man very excited to see Kenny Wayne Sheppard, Ronnie Earl, BB King! Absolutely love those guys! And there is so much more great talent coming this year.
What’s your all time favourite summer song?
Hmmm…All Time Favourite Summer Song….I’m thinking Bob Marley’s song Three Little Birds!
