Brewery on Two Wheels Turns 2: Bicycle Craft Brewery Anniversary

By Jordan Duff on September 26, 2016

This month Bicycle Craft Brewery celebrated its second year in business and, in honour of this accomplishment, is throwing a little libation celebration on Saturday October 1, at the brewery (850 Industrial Ave.).

image2In addition to their regular lineup of brews, the BCB team promises live music, food, beer flights plus the release of anniversary beer: Rum Barrel Aged Mr. Templeton’s Wee Heavy. The aforementioned rum barrel is from just down the street, from near-neighbour North of 7 Distillery. So local. The ale is imbued with the characteristics of the liquor with aromas of rum, oak and vanilla being complemented by a smooth finish.

image3Co-owner Laura Behzadi was kind enough to take some time away from birthday party planning to talk about their brewery’s journey to year 2. Plus, blowing up balloons is the worst.

Laura tells us that the brewery has grown quickly over the past two years and the BCB team is thrilled they have a strong customer base regularly visiting the brewery. In two years, they have quadrupled capacity by adding new fermenters, brite tanks and installing a canning line. Cans of Velocipede IPA are now available through the LCBO. The brewery has also hired new staff this year and have begun creating new experimental brews with their assistance. Barrel-aged beers are also part of this expansion and, beyond the rum-barrel treat available at the anniversary party, will include a Holiday barley wine as well. “Our growth has certainly exceeded our expectations!” says Laura.

image4Looking back at year two, the team is proudest of the Bikes and Biergarten event that they hosted on Beechwood Ave. Fittingly, the occasion raised funds for re-Cycles Ottawa as well as Helping with Bikes, part of the Helping with Furniture charity. Aside from the food trucks, games, live entertainment and beer, the event raised over $2,000 for the two partner charities. This will be an annual event so watch for its second iteration come spring 2017. Their other popular pairing events of beer & cheese and beer & chocolate will also be back in year 3.

As they continue to grow, BCB is excited at the prospect of introducing their beer to new people as they will be available in more and more locations throughout this fine city of Ottawa.
