I know it’s still summer but….
Ziggy Zaggy, Ziggy Zaggy, Oi Oi Oi! Better start practicing your German toasts to health and wellness, because everyone’s favourite Vankleek Hill field party will soon be here. Mark your 2015 cat calendar for Friday October 2 and Saturday October 3: Beau’s Oktoberfest 2015. Oh and tickets went on sale at 10AM August 6 for $27 a day or $39.50 for the weekend – I’ll just wait for you here while you go get those.
Look, I could talk about Oktoberfest all day but you’re busy and the Apt613 editors like me to keep my word count down (limits sperlling errors). So, here are 5 things to look forward to at Beau’s Oktoberfest 2015:
Headliners. If you missed Yukon Blonde crushing it at Dragon Boat Fest earlier this summer, don’t miss this second chance. Their new album has just the right amount of 80s flare: so it’s catchy but not terrible like most music of that decade was. Bonus marks for having the best hair in the biz. Alvvays was a nice score for the Beau’s and will close out the Saturday show. If you haven’t heard their hit Archie Marry Me – man, turn on the radio once and awhile. Bonus marks to lead singer Molly Rankin for keepin’ the Rankin Family name in Canadian music.
Competitive Brewing. Brewing is not for the faint of heart, just as drinking isn’t for the faint of liver. The Members of Barleyment, Ottawa’s homebrewing association, run a judged annual amateur brewing competition which has ended in past years with the winner brewing a beer at Beau’s. This year they’ve added a People’s Choice section to help better introduce the general populace to the beauty of homebrew. But the spirit of competition doesn’t end there, the Beau’s folks have divided themselves into 4 groups and are striving to build a better beer than the other 3 teams: The Return of the Battle of the Beau’s.
Quality Food. Look, you’re gonna be drinking a lot of amazing craft beer, why not build a solid base of high-end grub to keep you moving forward. You could also try pairing different styles of food with various styles of beer; isn’t that fancy? 28 restaurants will be bringing a wide range of food to the party. If you’re a meat ‘n potatoes sorta person: pretzel and sausage is a good starting point. Just don’t eat while watching the Sausage Eating Contest. Trust me.
Bus. To quote Yukon Blonde’s My Girl: “You get these urges to just drive when you’re drunk”. Avoid those urges. Being the designated driver is noble but even the DD should take this night off. Enjoy the night and let the big yellow school bus take you home. What better way to meet new friends than share a bus ride between Vankleek Hill and Ottawa/Montreal/Cornwall? Or if you’re all partied-out, maybe take a nap? It’s a win-win-win.
Beer. Obviously. The history of this festival dates back to a Bavarian royal wedding and has become a celebration of German culture: a culture that includes beer. This festival has a lot of amazing events, food and music happening but the glue that holds it all together is beer. Beau’s is bringing a brewer’s dozen (14) beers to the party. There will also be a by-invite-only Craft Haus, where the good people of Beau’s will be sharing their personal favourite beers from across Canada and around the globe. I don’t know how you gain access, so if you find out, lemme know!
*Bonus events: And I’ve gone over my limit BUT my lady wanted me to highlight her top Oktoberfest highlights: There is cider for the non-beer or G-free crowd. There is also a plethora of carnival-style games with tokens and prizes to be won.
Contest: Beau’s and Dine Alone Records have teamed up to create a cool prize pack to commemorate Dine Alone Records 10th Anniversary. The package is valued at over $350 and contains the following items:
