We waited excitedly in front of our computer screens in high anticipation for Broadway Across Canada to announce their 2019/2020 season in Ottawa. After releasing hints on their social media channels for the past two weeks, they did not disappoint, with one of the best seasons of shows to date.
RENT (October 22-27, 2019)
After the recent popularity of FOX’s RENT Live!, there is no doubt that Rentheads will be all over this 20th anniversary tour. RENT follows the lives of a group of 20-something bohemian artists struggling through relationships, financial stability, drugs and disease in the mid 90’s and was the Hamilton of its day with hard-to-get tickets and lines around the block.
Waitress (December 31, 2019 – January 5, 2020)
Inspired by the 2007 film of the same name, this show tells the story of Jenna, a waitress at a diner, who uses pie making as a release from the struggles of her life. When she unexpectedly becomes pregnant and meets a new a doctor from out of town her life goes down a different track then she originally planned. This was an unexpected hit on Broadway and has seen many well-known actors take roles in the show with original music and lyrics written by Sara Bareilles.
Cats (March 10-15, 2020)
This iconic hit has won a ton of awards and is from one of the most successful Broadway writers of all time – Andrew Lloyd Webber. Based on a book of T.S. Eliot poems about the mischievous world of, well, cats, people will be familiar with songs like “Memory” and “The Rum Tug Tugger” and is surely one for the nostalgic musical theatre fans.
Hamilton (May 19 – June 14, 2020)
Is there really anything we need to say about this one? The worldwide phenomenon is finally hitting Ottawa! The hottest show to hit Broadway in recent years, from the mind of Lin-Manuel Miranda, will take you for an emotional ride. The story of Alexander Hamilton, one of the founding fathers of America, is told through a fast-paced hip-hop soundtrack and will guarantee to live up to the hype.
