July’s Awesome Ottawa award goes to Fadhili Samba. Samba is the creator of the Princess Party Project, which aims to make royal visits more accessible for kids.
Samba says, “Children should be able to celebrate their magical day regardless of their parents’ or guardians’ financial situations,” according to a press release. “I created this project so that parents can have a local alternative. And what’s more magical than a royal visit?”

Samba’s project started as a New Year’s resolution in 2019. She decided to make her own Frog Princess dress and host free birthday parties.
“I was looking for a way to combine all my skills and experiences in a way that could be of service to the community,” she says.
The financial support from Awesome Ottawa will allow Samba to add two new princesses to her lineup and help pay for travel expenses.
Samba works in early childhood education and is a competitive cosplayer.
You can check out her work with the Princess Party Project on her website.
Awesome Ottawa is part of a global movement of self-organizing chapters forwarding the interest of awesome in the universe, $1,000 at a time. At each chapter, ten or so “trustees” each contribute $100 every month, and review short applications received online to decide on the recipient of the pooled funds — usually a local project, but occasionally a particularly awesome one far away from home. Globally, over $5 million has already been awarded – $141,000 of that by Awesome Ottawa.
