I think the best way to describe myself is equal parts adventurer and couch potato. I love exploring new things and different places, whether it's a lake to kayak or a restaurant to try. But I'm just as happy relaxing on the couch with a good book or fantasy-based RPG. I'm a strong supporter of animal welfare and volunteer with a local rescue group, GSNCR, that adopts out retired racing greyhounds. I also co-host a radio show on CKCU called Digestive Tracks, that's all about food and local foodie news. Some of my favourites in no particular order: Authors: JJR Tolkien, Jacqueline Carey, Robin Hobb, Patrick Rothfuss, Guy Gavriel Kay. TV/Movies: Star Trek: TNG, X-Files, Battlestar Galactica, Game of Thrones, Star Wars (original three), Lord of the Rings, Walking Dead. Anime: anything from Studio Ghibli, Mushi-Shi, Samurai Champloo, Death Note, Ninja Scroll, FMA, Cowboy Bebop. Video Games: Super Mario Bros. 3, Okami, Dragon Quest XIII, Costume Quest, Shadow of the Colossus, FF IX, The Last of Us

Foodie Friday: Crowdsourcing dinner at the Urban Element

We’ve all heard the saying “there’s too many cooks in the kitchen”, but that isn’t a problem at Hintonburg’s Urban Element – they’ve just made the kitchen bigger! My husband and I have been meaning to take a cooking class at the Element for some time now and we were finally able to this past […]

Looking for a good shuck? Check out the Elmdale!

I recently had the opportunity over the holidays to exchange emails with Peter McCallum and Joshua Bishop of Whalesbone Oyster House on Bank Street concerning their acquisition of the Elmdale Tavern in Hintonburg. Their joint ownership became official just after Christmas, though you may remember some hoopla a few months back when this purchase was […]

Ralph Bakshi: Past, Present and Future

Take One by Yasmin Nissim Ralph Bakshi is a lot of things. He’s an award winning animator, a director, an artist; he’s the man behind Fritz the Cat, one of the most successful independent animated films ever made, along with countless other notorious features that have pushed boundaries and offended the conservative sensibilities of the unimaginative. […]

Where the Wild Things Are: Patrick Watson Hits Folk Fest

Co-authored with Chris Cline, photo by Yasmin Nissim Patrick Watson is a benevolent mad scientist. All you’ll need is one listen to his cathartic cabaret melodies and you’ll be convinced of this fact. Sunday night’s Folk Fest attendees certainly were. Watson was in Ottawa with his band in support of their new album, Adventures in […]

One soundtrack to bring them all and in the darkness bind them!

The low driving bass notes that told you Jaws was on his way, the nerve-jangling screeching of strings from Hitchcock’s Psycho that changed showering forever, the brazen trumpets of the Star Wars theme that gave you hope for the rebel alliance, these are all quintessential examples of the importance of music in spinning a tale. […]

Step into our Delorean back to Ottawa’s first comiccon!

This past weekend the CE Centre was overrun with a fabulous array of self-styled geeks, freaks and misfits attending Ottawa’s first ever Comiccon. Costumed attendees pulled out all the stops with everything from amazingly detailed Steampunk gadgets and gizmos, to scantily clad villains and vixens. There was even a working replica of the The Delorean […]
