François Levesque is one of Apt613’s co-founders. To this day, he holds the record for the most blog posts.
When it comes down to it, Apt613 exists because a group of friends believed Ottawa could do better.
We knew that so much was happening and that ‘the city that fun forgot’ moniker was a false one.
All we needed was a computer, the Internet and a few creative people. In the early days, it helped that I did not have a job, and had lots of time to write.
It was in late 2008, early 2009, that Apt613 was born over pints at the Manx. One of us knew coding, another one was a journalist (hello Althia!) and the rest of us had ideas, opinions, and time. I remember the good old days when my partner and Apt613 co-founder (hello Katie!) would spend hours on end, after work, inputting calendar events.
At the core of it, it was strength in numbers that allowed us to survive, grow, and strive. And I’m forever thankful for those who cultivated the culture of volunteering at Apt613.
We’re so proud to see how the Apt613 community has grown and how it remains committed to showcasing all that’s great about Ottawa.
This project has grown far beyond our expectations. See what we looked like at the beginning https://apt613.wordpress.com/!
Apt613 was always an online platform first—a place for people to share ideas, happenings, and interviews with interesting local people. It has been a place to showcase the positive about our city. But through the leadership of folks such as Karen Diepeveen, Ryan Saxby Hill, and Katrina Marsh, we took that engagement beyond the world wide web to the streets of Ottawa by organizing successful Support Local months, learnings series, and a mayoral candidates’ debate way back when.
In the past 10 years, some of us have gotten married, had babies, and moved to other cities, yet we’ve never ceased to care about this project. We’re so proud to see how the Apt613 community has grown and how it remains committed to showcasing all that’s great about Ottawa. To many more years of success!
A big shout out to past and present staff and interns (Devora, Lee, Gregg, Phil, Hannah, Jared, Evey, Alex, and Shannon) and our hundreds of volunteers who have made the Apt613 community what it is. Looking forward to eating celebratory cake with you all on June 13!
