Ottawa’s Compliments & Complaints Department is a featured column supported by the Apt613 Fellowship Program. The aim is to spotlight locals from different hoods of the capital, letting them celebrate this city and share their constructive criticisms.
About: Steve works and lives in Little Italy. He also plays in a bunch of bands.
Hood: Little Italy, in front of Pub Italia.
Complaint: The construction at Carling and Preston. They’re putting up huge buildings. At the corner of his street, they’re building a nine story building. It seems like it’s going to rattle his house and tumble it to the ground. That’s his number one complaint, and fear: he doesn’t want his house to fall over. It’s a really old house and it’s kind of wonky and he has a feeling it’s going to crumble.
Compliment: He loves all the food in the hood. All the sandwich shops are amazing: Di Rienzo‘s, Sherwood Deli and Meadows, where he just had breakfast at 1 p.m. in the afternoon. And then, the Italian places are amazing like Black Cat and The Prescott. And here, Steve’s girlfriend interrupts him to remind him that Black Cat is a French bistro. He takes it lightly and says yes, they’re both amazing, even though one is French and the other Italian, the food in this hood is just good.
Recommendation: Food stuff like Suzi Q doughnuts on Wellington and Sherwood Deli for sandwiches. Steve eats a lot, says his girlfriend. He also really loves the space where he jams at the end of Preston, Capital Rehearsal Studios at City Center. Also, he loves all the venues like House of TARG and Black Squirrel Books & Tea.
