AccelerateOTT to punch local innovation into overdrive

By Jordan Duff on April 28, 2016

Invest Ottawa and C100 are organizing a one day networking event to punch local innovation into overdrive! AccelerateOTT – May 5th at Lansdowne. The event is geared towards all students, entrepreneurs, makers, startups, mentors, founders, funders and other driven individuals (last car reference, I promise; I drive a Yaris, I’m in over my head).

As the name suggests, this event targets those who want to hammer down and get their business or idea off the ground. Through learning from those entrepreneurs and small businesses that have come before, the hope is that upcoming local start-ups are able to get to market quicker and with fewer mistakes. These shared words of wisdom will hopefully reduce the fear of failure and give examples of how others have persevered. Speakers include industry experts who have been involved with successful projects, such as, just to name drop a few, Netflix, Etsy, Kijiji, Shopify, and TED Talks. Of course, there will also be ample opportunity to network with your fellow innovative peers.

No longer the sleepy town that once dogged its reputation, Ottawa is becoming a hub of innovation and entrepreneurship. This is no accident, as there has been a purposeful ongoing effort from the local business and education ecosystem to promote entrepreneurship as a career choice. Business incubators, social networks, impact centres and university entrepreneurial centres can now be found across the 613. The impact is real, look at startups like Gymtrack, ChangeJar, Gnowit, popkey and boardspace as successful examples.

Invest Ottawa, co-organizer of this event, worked with nearly 200 startups in 2015, helping them secure $50+ million in funding. IO staff will also be on hand to chat with current or budding entrepreneurs about how they can help them achieve their goals.

Now if meeting fellow start-ups and learning from successful business people isn’t enough to entice you, there is an after party at Jack Astors Lansdowne. There, attendees can taste the achievements of another local success story – Beau’s Brewery. Unless you are a minor; then you can have juice and my admiration for your advanced knowledge and ambitions.
