A weekday guide to Ottawa

By Steffani Ruesga on June 15, 2015

We work for the weekend: every day is a countdown until Friday. Once Friday rolls around, the weekend zooms by in a flash. Suddenly we’re back to Monday facing another week of work, and the whole dreary cycle repeats itself. But life doesn’t have to be this way. Luckily, Ottawa has dealt us some pretty entertaining weeknights.

Weekday 3So cheer up, Monday doesn’t have to be the worst day of the week.

First things first. You’re done work so head over to The Standard on Elgin. They have amazing deals all week and Monday is no exception. Start by indulging in their appetizers and Kichesippi beer, 6 bucks each until 6pm. Known as 6 for 6 until 6, let this be the mantra that gets you through your work day. Later, move on to their $5 mojitos. Take it easy though, because as much as you’re trying to forget it, it’s still only Monday.

Tuesday is a great day for specials in Ottawa. Ottawa has a variety of Tuesday fun to match your mood. Whether it’s trivia, drinking, eating, or all of the above, Tuesday has you covered. Pour Boy Pub has trivia night starting at 7pm. It’s fun, a bit challenging and pints are $5. Ottawa has many trivia nights throughout the week but Pour Boy has the smallest venue, making it more intimate and easier to hear the host. Note: Most trivia nights in the city are designed by the same company, so make sure you don’t show up to the same quiz at another bar.

If you’re feeling a little less intellectual and a little more boozy, hit up Slice and Co.. Tuesday means tequila at this bar. Load up on $2 shots, enjoy people watching on their terrific patio, and maybe get a slice to soak up your sins.

In the mood for food? It’s Taco Tuesday at Mugshots. Tacos here are cheap and delicious, made on the barbeque right in front of you. They serve vegetarian ones too ( we all know there’s a lot of herbivores in Ottawa). The atmosphere is fun, you almost feel as though you’re barbequing at a friend’s house. So every Tuesday just remember; trivia, tacos and tequila.

Weekday 2Wednesday, hump day. You’re almost there! The Royal Oak serves $5 dollar pints every day, so go warm up there. If you missed trivia on Tuesday you can catch trivia at any Oak bar on Wednesday. What’s more, they have tall bottles of Corona and Stella for $7.50. Once you’ve wrapped up the quiz and won (you won, right?), make your way over to one of Ottawa’s newest bars, The Waverley. Wednesday means $6 cocktails and good music. The cocktails change every Wednesday, but they’re always creative and delightful. The DJ pumps out some great tunes and you’re guaranteed to have an enjoyable time. If your bank account allows it, savour their food. It’s unique and scrumptious (e.g. Lobster Mac & Cheese).

Now it’s Thursday and you’ve basically made it. Unwind at Yuk Yuk’s or Absolute Comedy for some truly entertaining stand up. If you’re a student, you receive a discount. Take your friends and hope one of them gets singled out by the comedian.

Had a hard week and in need of something mellow? Woody’s features live musicians every Thursday night. So go check out the Ottawa talent, there’s some gifted folks in this city.

There you have it, your weekday guide to Ottawa. Enjoy what this beautiful city has to offer instead of zooming home in a bad mood after work. Friday is always around the corner. But then again, so is Monday.
