4 chefs + 4 breweries = 4 Pivot’s Sake AND a ticket giveaway!

By Ashley on August 22, 2013

With the number of great restaurants constantly increasing, and a craft beer scene that seems to have exploded over the past year, we’re certainly spoiled for choice here in Ottawa. This Saturday, at least, choosing won’t be so difficult. Get ready for food from 4 killer chefs and beer from 4 different breweries as they all come together for 4 Pivot’s Sake.

That’s right, dining al fresco at Mugshots, you’ll have the opportunity to nosh on 4 plates from 4 of the city’s best. In addition to showing off some exquisite local cuisine, each dish will be perfectly paired with a beer from some very talented local brewers. Jamie Stunt, formerly of Oz Kafé and last year’s Gold Medal Plates winner, is paired up with Ashton Brewing Company. Speaking of winners, their lovely Vanilla Stout just won best beer at National Capital Craft Beer Week. If you haven’t escaped Centretown to visit Vegan Queen Briana Kim at her adorable Café My House, a taste of her plate this weekend will surely convince you it’s worth the trip. She’ll be matched up with the uber creative Nickel Brook, who do everything from marzenbier to green apple pilsner. Chef Steve Harris from Two Six {Ate} has small plates down, and given the restaurant’s amazing beer selection will no doubt craft something worthy of Ottawa institution The Clocktower. It seems as if the astounding Marc Doiron of TOWN manages to do EVERYTHING (much to our delight), as do the good people at Beau’s, so it’s apt they round out the roster. Oh, AND there are treats from Pascale’s Ice Cream, AND dessert from Auntie Loo’s. Bam.

Sounds like a pretty solid dinner, huh? This event is quite clearly about food, beer, and good people, but there’s more. It’s also a chance to raise funds and awareness for For Pivot’s Sake, an initiative between the Ottawa Community Skateboard Association (OSCA) and Antique Skate Shop to help recycle used skateboards. Throughout the year the shop collects used gear, and refurbishes it. Now here’s where things get really interesting, since the refurbished boards go to youth in low-income communities. Only in operation a short time, they’ve already donated tons of clothes, safety equipment and over 75 complete boards to kids at skateboard parks, schools and spots like Banff Community House, located in one of Ottawa’s lowest-income areas. Kids, who otherwise, likely wouldn’t have the chance to partake in extra-curriculars. Turns out no coaches, no early morning practices, and low start-up costs make skateboarding a great fit for families with few resources to devote to recreation. It gets kids out being active, breathing fresh air, and if you’ve had the pleasure of hanging out with skaters, you’ll know they form some pretty tight crews (everyone shares the pain when someone takes a gnarly fall). For Pivot’s Sake is already doing a stellar job getting ‘em stoked, but are ready to take it even further with mentorship programs to really help engage and inspire these youth. The 4 Pivot’s Sake Dinner is your chance to help them out.

If you’ll be attending the dinner, be prepared to bid on some amazing items in the fundraiser auction, like prints from Jack Hillman or pieces from Magpie Jewellery. Can’t make dinner? Then it’d better be because you’re preparing for the epic after party to follow. It’s sponsored by Beau’s, DJ’ed by DJ Pat Johnson & DJ Palm D’Or, and will be a really good time. Let’s be honest: you’ll probably be out drinking anyway. Might as well do it for a good cause, for pivot’s sake.

The 4 Pivots Sake Dinner is this Saturday, August 24th, 5:00pm – 8:30pm at Mugshots (75 Nicholas). Tickets are $60 but quite limited: e-mail 4pivotssake@gmail.com for availability, or contact any of the hosts on the Facebook Event. The after party with DJ’s Pat Johnson & Palm D’Or starts at 9:00pm, and advance tickets are available at Antique Skate Shop for $5, or for $7 at the door.

Can’t afford the price of admission? We’ve got a pair of tickets for you! Just send us an e-mail with 4 Pivot’s Sake in the subject header to apartment613 [at] gmail.com by Friday, August 23 at noon. We’ll then do a random draw. Good Luck!
