Weekly News Review: Comiccon, Ottawa’s Top Chef contenders, Salvation Army strike and more!

By François Levesque on March 12, 2012

This won’t be news to the over 1,000 Facebook fans this event has already garnered, but for everyone else: Ottawa’s getting its very own ComicCon. Get ready to geek out May 12-13, 2012 at the CE Centre with DC Comics Marco Rudy, legendary comic artist Neal Adams, the Capital City Garrison – 501st Legion and many, many more. OH! And I recently learned Captain Jean-Luc Picard will be there himself!

In the last three years since Apt613 inception, we’ve been seeing Ottawa’s foodie scene growing by leaps and bounds. Another sign of its growth? Two Ottawa chefs will be competing in the next edition of Top Chef Canada. Courtyard Restaurant’s Curtis Luk and the Sidedoor Contemporary Kitchen’s Jonathan Korecki will be competing against 14 chefs from across Canada for $130,000 in the Food Network’s successful series. The series premieres today.

The Carleton Ravens reign supreme once again in men’s CIS basketball after beating the Alberta Golden Bears 86-67 on Sunday in Halifax. This is the eighth time in ten years the Ravens take top honours. The win caps an undefeated season for the Ravens.

Salvation Army employees in Ottawa have now been on strike for over sixty days. Salvation Army is offering a 7.5% pay increase while Public Service Alliance of Canada is asking for a 15% increase of three years. The increase offered by the employer doesn’t even meet what the Salvation Army itself claims is needed to lift workers out of poverty.
