Weekly News Review: Provincial Liberals debate in Ottawa, bring on plasma gasification and more!

By François Levesque on December 17, 2012

You’ll get the chance to hear from provincial Liberal candidates vying for Premier Dalton McGuinty’s job this Tuesday as Glen Murray, Sandra Pupatello, Eric Hoskins, Charles Sousa, Hrinder Takhar, Kathleen Wynee, and Gerard Kennedy will debating at Carleton University’s River Theatre Building starting at 7pm.

Innovative solution or environmental quagmire? That’s what the next few years will tell us about the newly signed 20 year deal linking the city of Ottawa to Plasco Energy Group. Under the terms of the 20-year deal, the city will truck 109,500 tonnes of garbage annually to be run through Plasco’s experimental “plasma gasification” process, converting the waste to gas used for energy generation. However, the process hasn’t yet been tested on a large scale. The city will play the company $83.25 per tonne processed.

Something’s wrong with OC Transpo buses. An access to information report states that between January 1st and December 3rd of this year 337 of fumes or other foul mechanical smells were reported on their buses. It looks like clogged air filters might be the culprit; the issue is still something the city is looking to, particularly after the Ottawa Citizen reported two bus drivers being sent to the hospital last month following exhaust leaks.
