Long Weekend Roundup: Quoi faire ?

By Amanda Armstrong on August 2, 2018

The best thing about summer weekends in this city? There is so much happening, that there is always something to do! The weather is hot, it’s a perfect time to get outside, and this weekend is burgeoning at the seams with all kinds of great goings on. Take a look for yourselves.

All Weekend

The grills will be hot this weekend as Capital Ribfest takes over the Festival Plaza at Ottawa City Hall all weekend long. In addition to some delicious ribs, there will be live music, a beer tent, and a rock climbing wall. Bring the whole family for dinner, canine members included, and make a night of it.

For those of you who enjoy theatre, why not theatre with a twist? Head to Strathcona Park for Theatre Under the Stars, each night at 8pm and Sunday at 2pm. Odyssey Theatre presents Lysistrata and the Temple of Gaia. Set in the future world, humanity finds itself under threat of destruction by Goddess Gaia, should they not take better care of the planet. What ensues is a hilarious battle of the sexes.

The Ottawa International Buskerfest returns to Sparks Street this Thursday and runs all weekend long. Take a stroll along the cobblestone and witness amazing feats of acrobatics, magic, contortionism, and all sorts of other kooky talents.

Thursday

The Museum of Nature is hosting a free talk about the state of plastics pollution in our oceans this Thursday. Join Dr. Julia Schnetzer, Dr. Peter Ross, and Dr. Jennifer Provencher at the talk, being held in conjunction with the museum’s outdoor exhibit, Ocean Plastics Lab, on display until August 12th.

Some of us excel at caring for our leafy friends and others, well, let’s just say our thumbs are not terribly green. Thankfully there are plants for even those who can’t seem to keep anything alive – air plants! Learn all about air plants with TerraVelta at The Art House Café this Thursday. You will learn how to care for them and make your very own decorative air plant globe to take home and practice your green thumb on.

Friday

Our favourite soccer team’s cleats hit the field this Friday, as the Ottawa Fury take on the Tampa Bay Rowdies at TD Place. The team is coming off a loss last game: let’s cheer them on and get them back on track to win it this weekend!

Saturday

Casino Lac-Leamy’s Sound of Light competition lights up the skies over the Ottawa River this Saturday with the first entry in this year’s performances by Spain. Grab a blanket and head to the Canadian Museum of History, or any of the great free viewing sites on this side of the river and be prepared for a beautiful sight to behold.

Sunday

If you’re in the mood for some tasty street food, make your way to the Street Food Social & Flea Market at Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation this Sunday. Their parking lot will be full of food trucks like Ad Mare Seafood, Sula Wok, and ROYI Latina Fusion, serving up a wide breadth of delicious eats. Amongst the flea market vendors are some amazing local artisans, with all sorts of jewelry, beauty products, and other handmade wares for your perusal.

The Amazing Thailand Festival is back for its second year in the Horticulture Building at Lansdowne Park. Experience Thai culture and enjoy some delicious Thai food, Thai massage, and live performances all day long. While at Lansdowne, why not take a stroll through the Ottawa Farmers’ Market? With summer in full swing, there is a wealth of great local produce to stock up on.

Well folks, that’s a wrap. Whether your weekend ends on Sunday night, or you are one of the lucky ones who benefits from this elusive August long weekend, enjoy it. Get out there on these hot summer days and have fun. Take lots of photos and hashtag them with #apt613 for a chance to be featured on our feed.
