Weekend Roundup: Quoi faire ?

By Amanda Armstrong on February 22, 2018

The great melt is upon us and, perhaps, the groundhog was wrong this year. With spring in your step, take the bull by the horns: the weekend is front loaded this time round, with plenty going on this Thursday and Friday. So much so that you’ll appreciate the slower Saturday to rest up and regroup for the week to come.

Join the iconic Chinadoll for Bingo tonight at Shanghai Restaurant. The lucky winner takes home the big prize of a private karaoke party with Chinadoll. Never won a thing in your life? Don’t fret. Even if you are not the winner, you still have the chance to sing your heart out with Chinadoll, as there will be karaoke following bingo.

Tonight also marks the much anticipated Poor Chef’s Competition at City Hall, put on by Operation Come Home. A host of local chefs must prepare dishes using only a budget of $3.15 and 2 of 10 commonly donated food bank items. Tickets to the event include appetizers made by FoodWorks, one of Operation Come Home’s social initiatives, and 6 lucky guests will get to join the judges and sample one of the entry dishes.

For those of you who have never been to Dominion City Brewery, this Friday is the night to make the trek to Canotek Road for another installment of Dominion City’s Pop-Up Brewery Kitchen. This time round, Whalesbone Elgin Street’s chef Tony Campbell will be at the brewery serving up some delicious food alongside some tasty beer pairings.

Appreciators of the arts won’t want to miss the vernissage happening this Friday night in Old Ottawa South. Local artist Stephen Frew’s solo show Moving Carbon opens at Seven Below Gallery. The show will feature several new figurative drawings in Frew’s signature style, done on wood, canvas, and paper.

If you are looking to dance off the stresses of the work week this Friday, mosey on down to the 27 Club, for DJ Emmett’s Friday I’m in Love indie pop dance party. DJ Emmett and guests will be bringing you an evening of your favourites, from Weezer, Radiohead, Joy Division, LCD Soundsystem, and more!

If funk is your thing, you’re going to want to make your way to Mercury Lounge this Saturday, to see a funktabulous performance by The Chocolate Hot Pockets. The groove will continue to flow after the show, with resident DJ Trevor Walker on decks and visuals by Matt Cameron.

If rock and roll is more your style, you’ll want to head on over to Bar Robo for Kick Out the Jam. An evening of rock and roll, punk, garage, post-punk, brought to you by the Showbox and Roadhaus DJs.

The warmer weather may have washed away your plans of skating on the Canada150 Rink before its closure this Sunday, or checking out the snow sculptures at Mosaivernales, but the trees are tapped and the syrup is flowing out in the sugar bush. It’s opening weekend for many of the sugar shacks, including Fulton’s Pancake House, Proulx Maple & Berry Farm, and Stanley’s Olde Maple Lane. Enjoy a delicious pancake breakfast and a sleigh ride through the sugar bush and wrap up the weekend with a delicious maple taffy treat!
