It’s a busy weekend so let’s get started!
The 2nd edition of Poets for Humanity is taking place tonight at Pressed. The night features some of the strongest poets in the city and serves as a fundraiser for various community programs. RAW:natural born artists is an international independent arts organization that hand-selects and spotlights independent creatives in visual art, film, fashion, music, hair & makeup artistry, photography, models and performing art. It’s hosting a showcase event this Thursday at the Saint Brigid’s Centre for the Arts.
Kelp Records turns 20 this year and to celebrate the milestone they’re throwing a few parties across the province. Friday evening is Kelp20’s “pre-game warmup” featuring Kelp DJs & friends, food, and drink at the Avalon Studio. The main event is a show at St. Alban’s Saturday evening featuring a who’s who of Ottawa’s music scene: The Acorn, Jim Bryson, HILOTRONS, Andrew Vincent, Evening Hymns, Chris Page, Recoilers, Andy Swan, Banditas, Rhume, Flecton Big Sky and more. Tix are $15 advance and $20 at the door. We are giving away a pair of tickets to Saturday’s show. Just let us know in the comments what your favourite song by a Kelp artist! Winner to be announced Thursday evening at 10pm.
The popular Gatineau Festibière is back. You’ll get to sample micro-brews from all over Québec from Friday 3pm to Sunday 5pm. It’s $30 for a 3 day pass or $15/day. The even takes place at Parc Jacques Cartier.
Saturday ramps up with ArtsPark in Hintonburg’s Parkdale Market beginning at 10am. Capital Velo Fest is happening at City Hall Plaza from 4 to 11pm. It will feature all things cycling at the Bicycle Rodeo, and the magical Tour La Nuit ride in the evening. Out in the east end, the Shenkman Arts Centre will be celebrating 5 years with a bunch of free activities including a performance by singer songwriter Amanda Rhéaume. Latin Sparks begins its summer run the last Saturday of every month. The dancing begins at 9:30pm. It’s $10 for general admission.
A few years ago, Cube Gallery had a hugely popular local exhibit entitled Alleyways, featuring – you guessed it – Ottawa alleyways. Ottawa Alleyways II is now showing at Cube featuring Jay Anderson, John Jarrett, Strachan Johnston, Olaf Krassnitzky, Pina Manoni-Rennick, Karole Marois, Paul Schibli, Karl Schutt. Vernissage taking place on Sunday from 2-5pm. Hip hop heads will want to check out Minneapolis’ own Atmosphere, playing at Ritual. Tickets are $25.
