Urban Craft Celebrates its first birthday, and you get the present!

By Karen Diepeveen on August 27, 2012

Time flies when you’re having fun – particularly crafty fun! It’s hard to believe it’s already been a year since Urban Craft kicked off Ottawa’s first ever monthly craft show, but it’s true. After welcoming over 6,000 people to their shows, and showcasing 150 small, independent, local businesses, they’ve got a lot to be thrilled about.

And so they’re throwing a birthday craft show bash! This month’s Urban Craft will have presents for the first 25 people to drop by, local food vendors will have all-day tastings, and there will be some fun crafty activities for the kids. Yelp! Ottawa is donating door prizes, too, and they’ll have a gourmet popcorn bar open to everyone who stops by.

More info on the party – and our giveaway! – below, but first, we got Krista Leben, co-creator and co-organizer of Urban Craft, to chat a little bit about Ottawa’s crafting scene:

Apartment613: What sets Urban Craft apart from other Ottawa craft markets?

Krista: Urban Craft allows Ottawans to come shop from independent artisans on a monthly basis. Most of Ottawa’s craft shows happen during the summer and holiday months, and we wanted to provide a place where Ottawans could shop from crafters year-round in a show setting. The show also allows attendees to discover new and fresh talent, as we’re always adding new vendors to the show–many of whom have never even sold at a craft show before! So it’s a chance to see who is up-and-coming in Ottawa’s craft scene. Urban Craft is also a juried show, and we select our vendors very carefully; after a year we have really gotten a feel for what our customers like, and so we spend a lot of time ensuring that the vendors in our show have things that our customers will just love.

How would you describe the Ottawa crafting scene?

Krista: Has it been changing recently? I feel as though the Ottawa craft scene is always evolving on a number of levels. I’ve only lived in Ottawa for three years, and in that time I’ve seen so many crafters start new businesses and I’ve also seen a lot of shows start, grow and blossom. As a show organizer, I’m always blown away by how, even now, the craft scene in Ottawa is growing and evolving. We’ve been producing craft shows for 3 years now, and each month we discover incredibly talented crafters that we never knew about before. Even today, we see young artisans starting up craft businesses and they come to us with fantastic creations. As a show organizer, it’s so inspiring and drives us to keep going. We get such a thrill out of being able to introduce Ottawans to their talented friends and neighbours.

If you want to join in the fun, head on down to the GCTC (1233 Wellington West) on Saturday, September 1, from 10am-3pm. Want to have a bit of extra spending money at the show? Leave a comment below with the name of your favourite vendor from Urban Craft, and we’ll enter you in a draw – first place will get $20 Urban Craft Bucks, and second place will get $10 Urban Craft Bucks. Comment before noon on Thursday August 29!
