Apt613 has a unique take on the “best” albums of 2017. We’ve looked to the charts published by CHUO 89.1FM to see which records made the highest weekly appearances. Most campus and community radio stations send play logs to !earshot, a website where you’ll find the national Top 50 reported weekly.
N.B. Not every album was released during this calendar year. In several instances, you’ll see a 2016 release which stayed in the charts. There are even one or two much older releases which appear to coincide with the artist’s 2017 concert dates.

|Title: Spring Thing Sampler||Weeks: 7|
|Artist: Compilation||Peak: #1|
|Label: Debaser||Avg: 10.3|
15 bands contributed tracks to Debaser’s 2017 Spring Thing Sampler. This compilation went out to radio stations ahead of the 6-show concert series last spring. The Debaser sampler was in CHUO’s Top 10 for five consecutive weeks and reached #1 in April.
|Title: For Sale||Weeks: 8|
|Artist: Telecomo||Peak: #1|
|Label: Record Centre Records||Avg: 12.8|
Hit play. Telecomo are an incredibly tight and catchy garage rock band. A trio made up of familiar faces: Adam Saikaley (guitar), Pat Johnson (drums) and Gary Franks (bass), all three of whom are highly experienced musicians (The Acorn, Silkken, Adam Saikaley Quartet, Hilotrons, Bondar, and more). Saikaley’s voice over pounding drums and very active, very groovy bass lines can get you hooked in ten seconds.
|Title: Billy Love Band EP||Weeks: 9|
|Artist: Billy Love Band||Peak: #4|
|Label: Independent||Avg: 13.9|
A group of super talented musicians contribute to this alternative rock fusion project. It’s a bit like if prog giants Muse covered Québec’s beloved, Les Colocs, for a James Bond theme or Cirque du Soleil show. French vocab is not required to enjoy this melodic and highly satisfying record.
|Title: More Butter||Weeks: 10|
|Artist: Mushy Gushy||Peak: #2|
|Label: Independent||Avg: 14.7|
Highly recommended if you enjoyed Telecomo at #19. Or if you liked the sound of Mushy Gushy at #47! That’s right, this year Mushy Gushy achieved what few artists do: two records in the Top 50 most played at CHUO. More Butter picks up where Tight Snake left off and spent twice as many weeks in the charts
|Title: So Right [Single]||Weeks: 11|
|Artist: Sparklesaurus||Peak: #1|
|Label: Independent||Avg: 15.5|
Sparklesaurus burst onto the scene with Perennials in 2016, an EP which earned the band invites to Arboretum, RBC Bluesfest, and MEGAPHONO the following year. “So Right” is their 2017 single which lit up the CHUO chart in the summer and fall. The new tune debuted at #27 but then spent five weeks in the Top 10 including a #1 in September.
|Title: Insatiable||Weeks: 8|
|Artist: Nile Groove||Peak: #1|
|Label: Independent||Avg: 9.4|
Nile Groove are an accomplished six-piece reggae, r&b, and funk band who gig regularly in Ottawa at Kinki, Bar Robo and The Rainbow, in Hull at Petit Chicago, and in Wakefield at The Black Sheep Inn.
|Title: Lufunki [Single]||Weeks: 8|
|Artist: The Souljazz Orchestra||Peak: #2|
|Label: Strut Records||Avg: 9.2|
This popular Souljazz single from their new album Under Burning Skies charted for eight weeks – and that’s not counting weeks the full-length record spent in the charts once released. Spoiler alert: Under Burning Skies has a spot in the Top 10 being revealed tomorrow.
|Title: Potential Red||Weeks: 8|
|Artist: Potential Red||Peak: #1|
|Label: Custom Made Music||Avg: 8.6|
The new Potential Red record started charting three weeks after its release on August 31. However, the album debuted at #5 and then shot to #1, leaving me to think three weeks is just how long it took the band to get it together and send a copy to CHUO.
|Title: Drivin' [Single]||Weeks: 10|
|Artist: Boyhood||Peak: #1|
|Label: Independent||Avg: 12.5|
Shot by travis boisvenue in Ottawa and Hull, this video for “Drivin'” caught the attention of Gorilla vs. Bear, widely considered to be one of the most influential in the history of indie mp3 blogs. Later GvB named “Drivin'” as one of the best songs in 2017, beating out Kendrick Lamar and other renowned artists for the #22 mention.
|Title: Sweet Sweet Morning||Weeks: 10|
|Artist: Piith||Peak: #3|
|Label: Independent||Avg: 12.2|
This Ottawa/Montreal duo make music they describe as “nightmare pop” and this listener describes as “pretty sick pop.” Sweet Sweet Morning was actually released in 2016, but charted for 10 weeks this year.
A total of 88 local albums made it into the CHUO 89.1FM charts this year. Watch this space while the Top 50 countdown continues daily until NYE.
