The Croatian cellist duo known as 2Cellos, featuring Luka Šulić and Stjepan Hauser, will be making their way to the National Arts Centre on April 15. Classically trained, the duo made it big in 2011 after uploading a cover of Michael Jackson’s “Smooth Criminal” on YouTube, which has now garnered over 27 million views.
The group decided to go after the mainstream music market, as the two were going through some financial difficulties, and they were given a suggestion by a friend in Croatia to try their hand at it. After signing to Sony Masterworks in 2010, the duo created and performed cello arrangements to hit rock and pop songs such as “Welcome to the Jungle,” “Thunderstruck,” and “Smells Like Teen Spirit.”
2Cellos has now been all over the world, whether it be touring with legends like Elton John, performing at the iTunes Festival in London, to working with other classical and crossover musicians in the same boat such as the piano phenom Lang Lang.
This will certainly be a show which leaves you thinking differently about the cello, and the different music you can produce on the instrument. The duo will bring their unique style to Ottawa—don’t miss it!
2Cellos is performing at the National Arts Centre (1 Elgin St) on April 15 at 8pm. Tickets are available online and at the NAC Box Office.
