Become a CityMaker today with Synapcity’s Civics Boot Camp

By Nickie Shobeiry on September 27, 2018

It’s nearly time for Synapcity’s Fall 2018 Civics Boot Camp! Starting on October 25, this six-week program is for people who are passionate about Ottawa, and want to learn more about how the city works.

The program is co-created by citizens, specialists and community developers. Today, Synapcity has almost 300 alumni in the city. All of these CityMakers have worked with new contacts, neighbours and champions from various sectors – including municipal, non-profit and business institutions – on various social issues, guided by Synapcity’s trained facilitators.

Past examples of these case studies include Safe Injections Sites, Newcomer Settlement, Guns & Gangs and Urban Forests. Participants research the subject as well as learning civic navigation, engagement and dialogue.

This year, case studies are Farming and Sustainability, Marijuana Retail and Gentrification, and Inclusionary Zoning.

“Synapcity’s Civic Boot Camp provided a golden opportunity to evaluate my own leadership toolkit and engage with other CityMakers,” said Indigo Holley, Synpacity alumni. “My active participation in the Spring Session of Civics Boot Camp assisted me to hone my leadership skills, and motivated me to do more CityMaking. My advice to future participants: keep an open mind, be prepared to learn tons, and enjoy the wild ride and the process!”

Noah Fang, a designer thinker and Spring 2018 Boot Camp participant, said: “My biggest takeaway [from Civics Boot Camp] is that, by both participating and observing, I got to know not only what the people representative of Ottawa are thinking in terms of civic design, but also how they think and take action. I got to connect with people whose causes I can contribute to; I found people who can help me on my own pursuit of approaching social problems. The learning greatly enhanced my perspectives, and the connections strengthened everyone’s ability to act. I’m very very happy about the outcome.”

Thanks to support from the Ontario Trillium Foundation, Civics Boot Camp is a no-cost commitment! Apply by Friday, October 12.

The Fall 2018 Boot Camp will be held from October 25 to November 29 on Thursday evenings, from 5:30-9pm at L’Atelier, Saint Paul University.
