Friends With Benefits is a silent auction and sweaty dance party. Its about getting friends together to start a dialogue about mental illness and to benefit the Jennie James Depression Research Fund and the Royal Ottawa Hospital Foundation.
Friends With Benefits
Friends With Benefits was conceptualized by a group of friends whose aim is start a dialogue to reduce the social stigma around depression. By getting our friends, coworkers and neighbours together to share stories, we hope to illustrate that there are many people who are successful, contributing members of the community that are living (and thriving) with mental illness.
What is the Jennie James Depression Research Fund?
The Royal Ottawa Foundation for Mental Health raises funds to support the best possible patient care and leading edge research provided by the Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre, the Brockville Mental Health Centre, and the uOttawa Institute of Mental Health Research.
The Foundation’s funds are used to purchase Hospital equipment for capital projects, to support research, and to contribute to the improvement of patient care, now and for the future.
The Jennie James Depression Research Fund is an example of the Foundation’s work with one family. In 2006, shortly after losing his daughter Jennie to suicide, Ben James approached the Royal Ottawa Foundation for Mental Health with sadness and generosity in his heart to establish a special fund in her honour. Part of the funds raised from this event will support Jennie’s fund and ensure leading edge depression research for years to come. ‘If we can play a part in reducing the incidence of suicide in any way, we will have left a tremendous legacy of Jennie’s life.” says Ben James, Jennie’s father.
