Ruth Dick, MaryAnn Camps & Don Monet

July 17 – August 5, 2018

Vernissage: Thursday, July 19 from 6:00 – 9:00pm

Three friends explore the edges of photography.

In nature, the riparian zone is where water meets the shoreline. In this show, three Ottawa artists explore the edges of their individual creative practices.

MaryAnn Camps is drawn to the abstract edges of shadow and suggestion. Her work places itself firmly on the edge of photography through a study of transitions – the play of light, shadow and reflection. Her works are manually transferred to translucent film to augment its ghostly and ephemeral qualities.

Ruth Dick seeks edges in the black and white compositions of the every day. Her practice follows the edge of what we often overlook or take for granted. Under her gimlet gaze, the everyday becomes fantastical in a re-imagining of the banal as surprising discoveries. Often utilizing soft focus or macrophotography, the ordinary becomes extraordinary.

Don Monet explores and accentuates the edge between photography and painting. The viewer is invited to closely examine clearly defined lines of transition. Working on birch-wood board with acrylic paint and photos, these edges are slightly unnerving as his work melds photography and impressionist painting; the real and unreal; the figurative and the literal.
