In his newest series “Far and Wide”, Richard Ahnert further explores the Canadiana narrative. The body of work continues to invoke the nostalgic romanticism of the wildlife and people that make this vast land home.
The show draws heavily on Canadian iconography and nature symbolism. Like in most of Ahnert’s work, animals are shown as oddly displaced from their habitats and realities. Voluntary or forced, their departure preludes a new social order, one that is marked by the inevitable displacement and subdual of animal life via humans.
This series poignantly emphasizes the sanctity of our precious Canadian land and its inhabitants, while also alluding to the harsh realities that inevitably follow from human intervention. The work not only celebrates our glorious heritage and the beauty of the Canadian landscape, but often reminds us of our own folly.
