Have you ever seen a well-behaved guide dog for the blind walking easily with their handler along crowded streets? Did you wonder, how was this dog raised? What’s life like working with a guide dog?

Raising Stanley / Life With Tulia: the journey from puppy to working guide dog for the blind told through storytelling, paintings and video. The show will be performed and exhibited at the Great Canadian Theatre Company (GCTC) July 26 – August 5, 2018, directed by Bronwyn Steinberg.

Born blind, Ottawa storyteller Kim Kilpatrick performs stories based on her experiences with the four working guide dogs she has handled over the years: Gwenny, Margaret, Gia and Tulia.  Ottawa visual artist Karen Bailey raised Stanley, a platinum blonde Labrador puppy, for Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind. Karen painted Stanley engaging in a multitude of activities that mirror his future working life.

Performing in the Studio Theatre, Kim tells stories of life with guide dogs. Wall-sized enlargements of Karen’s paintings are projected in video format (by videographer Trudy Wohlleben) behind Kim, with voice-over audio description that integrates seamlessly with her live storytelling. Part of the show will take place entirely in the dark. In the adjacent Fritzi Gallery, Karen exhibits paintings with audio description of her works. A twelve minute process video of Raising Stanley/Life With Tulia by videographer Armin Badzak is displayed.  Included is an ASL Interpreter for the Deaf at two performances. A 44 page book featuring all of the paintings along with personal anecdotes by Kim and Karen is available.

An accessible production for adults and children.

We will have ASL interpretation at performances on Sunday, July 29 at 2:30pm and Friday, August 3 at 7:30pm.

Runtime of approximately 75 minutes with no intermission.

Tickets available at ($25 adults, $15 children, students and seniors)
