December 7 @ 8:00 am5:00 pm

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every day that begins at 8:00am, repeating until December 11, 2018

ERASURE / EFFACEMENT, a series of oil paintings by Ottawa artist Barb Lougheed, is on show at the AOE Gallery at the Shenkman Centre from Thursday, November 8, 2018 until December 11, 2018. A vernissage with the artist in attendance will take place on Sunday November 25, from 1 to 3pm.

Artist’s Statement:

This series explores the deadly impact on wildlife of loss of habitat through urbanization. The World Wildlife Fund’s Living Planet Report 2018 reports a 60% decline in populations of vertebrate species worldwide between 1970 and 2014. And we don’t get off lightly in Canada. In spite of a ‘national consciousness’ that rests on a concept of wilderness, this same report states a 50% decline in this country. A key causal factor in this decline is habitat modification, fragmentation and destruction.

These works of art place us in landscapes that are familiar yet askew – the colours are aggressively fluorescent and there are floating brains and wraithlike animals. This jarring world asks us to reflect on what is happening to nonhuman life on the planet and whether we are implicated in the paving over of animals’ space.

The show runs November 8 to December 11, 2018 at Arts Network Ottawa’s AOE Gallery at the Shenkman Centre in Orleans. The vernissage will be held Sunday, November 25 at 1 to 3 p.m.
