Sister Act, the Musical is making an Ottawa premiere showing. It is a story about a wannabe disco diva who witnesses a murder at the hands of her ex-lover. In a twist of fate, Deloris Van Cartier is hidden inside a convent by the police in the hopes it will keep their witness safe. Not one to have her star dimmed, she brings new life to Queen of Angel’s church and its choir of nuns. Doing so results in an explosion of attendance bringing the spotlight back to Deloris when for once, she doesn’t want it.
Based on the 1992 hit film starring Whoopi Goldberg; Sister Act the Musical, was written by Bill and Cheri Steinkeller with lyrics by Glenn Slater and music by Alan Menken.
This time, Deloris will be brought to life by Stephanie Jones. Stephanie is a self-confessed music junkie, you may have heard her powerful pipes from the choir of the Transforming Life Centre. Playing Deloris is a perfect fit for Stephanie whose love for the music and the message shines through.
“My favorite moment would be closer to the end when she not only realizes who she (Deloris) is but the impact the nuns made in her personal development.” Stephanie Jones
The sentiment is shared by Director Ellen Seguin who jumped at the chance to direct this show.
“Sister Act is my oldest daughter’s favorite movie, we have watched it countless times. From the music to the message of acceptance, it’s an all-around great story.” Seguin said. “I cannot wait for the audience to fall in love Deloris and the nuns, to go on her journey of self-discovery and to watch Mother Superior to change her mind about this intrusion in her life”
