The Enriched Bread Artists (EBA) is a not-for-profit cooperative of twenty-two Ottawa-based Visual Artists. Located in a former bread factory, the studios were formed in 1992 by the graduates of the Fine Arts program at the University of Ottawa. Today EBA is one of the largest artist co-ops in the region.
Our new project, funded by Ottawa 2017 Arts, Culture and Heritage Investment Program, will deliver a variety of visual displays, immersive experiences, and an all-out celebration with cakes! Cakes relate to the bakery heritage of our building, the Standard Bread Company, and they are also universal and accessible symbols of celebrations.

THE BIG CAKE PROJECTION (9:00 – 11:00 p.m. nightly) from August 17 – 31
The east side of our building will feature a large-scale projection series based on the history and heritage of our building, and the theme of celebration with cakes. Well-known as the former Standard Bread Factory that was built in the “Roaring 1920’s”, the projection will feature archival imagery intertwined with inspired and artistic contemporary interpretations of cake that have been created by EBA artists.

“LET US EAT CAKE” COMMUNITY WORKSHOPS & DEMONSTRATIONS
EBA is positioned on the borders of four vibrant Ottawa neighbourhoods: Chinatown, Little Italy, Hintonburg, and Mechanicsville. The cake theme will be celebrated as our large gallery spaces will host immersive and entertaining workshops and demonstrations led by dynamic community and culinary figures.
All of our workshops are hosted on the second floor of our building. Access to the inside of our building is limited to stairs. We do not have ramps, lifts, or elevators.

WORKSHOP/DEMO 1: “MOONCAKES” with The Shanghai Restaurant and ChinaDoll

The Shanghai Restaurant is Ottawa Chinatown’s first pioneering Chinese restaurant. A family owned and operated business, The Shanghai was established in 1971 by the Kwan family, and has been serving Asian inspired fare in an eclectic dining/bar atmosphere ever since. Over the years, Shanghai has been host to countless community events, fundraisers, and art happenings. For this “Let Us Eat Cake” workshop/demonstration, Shanghai’s resident drag artist, ChinaDoll, will be serving up mooncakes in celebration of the Lunar Chinese autumn moon. [Eventbrite]
WORKSHOP/DEMO 2: “CANNOLI SICILIANI” with Pasticceria Gelateria Italiana and Joe Calabro

Pasticceria Gelateria Italiana is the heart of Ottawa’s Little Italy. Established in 1979, this Italian focused and European inspired pastry shop has been serving up hot beverages, delicious gelato, and sweet temptations to the delight of the entire community. It is the place to go to sip an espresso and observe the life of Preston Street, or to order a cake for any occasion. WORKSHOP/DEMO 3: “CAKE DECORATING” WITH THE HINTONBURG CC

The Hintonburg Community Centre services the neighborhoods of Hintonburg and the Mechanicsville, and offers a wide range of recreational activities and programs for people of all ages. The centre also offers a number of specialized programs for people with disabilities. For the “Let Us Eat Cake” Workshops, the EBA will facilitate a cake decorating workshop with the campers of The Youth Summer Experience. This day camp provides new and exciting activities for youth and young adults with multiple disabilities, and offers campers the chance to interact with their peers and develop new friendships. This workshop is closed to the public.

Tell us your cake stories! We invite you to share your memories of cake and of celebration. With a keen focus on the cross experience between food, heritage, and culture, we will capture, via digital storytelling, a diverse range of unique Canadian stories from the culturally diverse Canadians in attendance at our events. On-site storytelling will be available on August 17, 20, and 23. Participation is voluntary.
