Centretown Comedy at Beerocracy—Thursdays starting 05.24.18

By Asim B. on May 22, 2018

Beerocracy is your friendly craft beer pub with a distinct character in Centretown. And now they’ve gotten even better because every Thursday, starting May 24, Beerocracy will host a new standup show called Centretown Comedy. The event is being co-produced by the owners of the bar and local comics Greg Houston and Christina Muehlberger. It’s a weekly event and best of all, admission is pay-what-you-can!

L to R: Greg Houston joins Scene Partners podcast hosts Ryan Mulligan and Christina Muehlberger.

“It’s a three way partnership.” says Greg, regarding the production of the show. “It’s a show organized by the venue, Christina, and me. (Beerocracy) is on Somerset and is a family owned and operated pub. There’s a really chill vibe to it and there is a focus on craft beer. They actually have a really huge selection. I honestly think the biggest beer selection in Centretown is between Beerocracy and the Elgin Beer Project. It’s a real fun hangout place.”

The aim of the producers is to create an atmosphere similar to a traditional comedy club, but with the addition of a large selection of craft beer. “(Beerocracy) has a room in their basement that’s almost like a speakeasy bar, it’s got seclusion so you don’t have noise bleed from other rooms, and has 30 to 40 seats. We’ll see where we go from there. Basically it’s a dedicated place for people to be there for the show, complete with a good PA system, a spotlight, a mic and all that…it’s going to be very inviting.”

When asked about the atmosphere, Greg noted that: “We hope to have a super safe space that’s accommodating to people… and we hope to gain a following over time.” Even though it’s a PWYC show, the producers are planning on splitting the pot with the host and feature. “We hope to split the money from the pay-what-you-can at first and work on getting a permanent budget in the future,” adds Greg.

We are trying to do the best weekly show outside of a comedy club.

As for his business partner, Christina, Greg has plenty of praise: “We have the same ideology towards comedy… she’s a hard worker and we seem to have the same idea of what makes a good show.” As for the showcase format versus an open mic, Greg explains: “showcase style is more like comics doing their better material, not doing open mic style material. They’re doing their practiced, honed stuff. We are trying to do the best weekly show outside of a comedy club. Another thing is that we hope to have cross over between visiting and local acts. We’re also trying to highlight the beer aspect, because we are going to have different breweries sponsor the show weekly.”
