Ottawans sure do love their yoga. Walk down Bank St. from Wellington to Gladstone and you’ll encounter more yoga studios than Bridgeheads. While the majority of practitioners do yoga for the physical health benefits, it’s well known toned muscles aren’t all you get from downward dog.

Yogawoman is an award winning documentary that tells the inspiring stories of women whose lives have been changed by yoga. Why just women? Although you’d never guess going into a studio here in North America, traditionally yoga was developed for men. It was brought to the western world from India by male teachers. Now women have turned yoga into a multi-billion dollar industry, and this is the story of why.

The film details how women have used yoga to ease the pain surrounding conditions like breast cancer or infertility. It tells of women who have used yoga to work through anxiety and depression. Revealing stories from Manhattan to Kenya, from prisons to cancer wards, “Yogawoman” is nothing short of inspirational.

The exceptional part of this premiere is the chance to talk to Ottawa’s own yoga women. At the opening screening there will be a special Q + A period with four Ottawa women who can relate the powerful effect yoga has had on their lives first hand. Kathy Smart from Live The Smart Way, Tara Porter from Restorative Yoga, Megan Campbell from Journey of the Yogini and Jennifer Steers are all experienced, certified yoga teachers. Come let them inspire you to get on the mat.

The premiere of “Yogawoman” with Q+A is this Friday, May 17th Theatre., 5:30 pm at the Mayfair.

Neil Cooke has found a way to bring together two of our favourite things: entrepreneurship and hockey.

Earlier this season, he launched broker4tickets.com, a local start-up that bases its business in making it easier for Ottawans to get closer than ever to the hockey they crave — by enabling season ticket holders to sell their unused tickets to other fans.

Last week, I swung by the Broker4Tickets office in Kanata to speak with Cooke (President and CEO) and Stuart Sage (Director of Business Operations), to learn a bit about how their business strives to integrate hockey even deeper into the culture of our fair city.

Cooke came up with the idea for the service about two years ago. His consulting firm, I4C, has been a season ticket holder for many years, but was unable to attend every game during the season. He found it frustrating when the tickets he had paid for went unused. This was problematic both as a customer and as a hockey enthusiast—it meant that he wasn’t getting the maximum return for his investment, but also that Scotiabank place contained empty seats that could have been filled with cheering Sens fans.

Broker4Tickets was Cooke’s solution to this problem—a service that allows season ticket holders to sell tickets for the games they can’t attend, and thus recoup a portion of their investment, while still maintaining all the benefits of buying season tickets. As Cooke explains, occasionally season ticket holders have to miss an entire season, but still want to buy season tickets to maintain rights to particular seats.

As useful as the service may be to season ticket holders, Cooke is more excited about the benefits that Broker4Tickets offers to hockey fans. By being able to purchase tickets normally reserved for season ticket holders, people are able to get seats that previously would have been inaccessible. For example, fans can buy seats right behind the glass, which generally cannot be purchased through other vendors. “Now fans can access something they could never have experienced,” Cooke explains. “These are seats that most hockey fans just wouldn’t otherwise have access to.”

Cooke is also proud to offer a more reliable and legitimate way for fans to share tickets and access experiences unavailable through traditional ticket-buying avenues. Buying tickets through Broker4Tickets comes with far more benefits than buying them from a scalper in a parking lot. Using online tools, buyers can research and read reviews of seats, as well as be comfortable buying tickets from a trusted source. Cooke says that the site “allows the community to have access to these new experiences in an informed and safe environment”.

Although there are other ticket reselling services, Broker4Tickets’ structure sets it apart. As Cooke explains, most other comparable services merely function as marketplaces where ticket holders can advertise their tickets for sale. This system can be problematic: anyone can post tickets for sale, and there are no safeguards to protect against fraud — such as a vendor selling the same ticket to multiple buyers. In these cases, buyers show up at an event, only to find that their tickets don’t work.

The uniqueness of Cooke’s approach is that ticket holders assign their tickets to Broker4Tickets, and when customers buy them online they receive the ticket automatically via email. Rather than allowing anyone to sell their tickets, Broker4Tickets works exclusively and directly with season ticket holders, thus ensuring the legitimacy of the tickets.

Cooke stresses that they have a policy to never sell tickets above their face value. He also points out that, for the buyer, there are no service fees or taxes (Broker4Tickets makes money by taking a cut on the seller’s end).

Broker4tickets partners with many organizations and charities throughout the community to spread the hockey love. For example, they work with the Boys and Girls Club to send underprivileged children to hockey games. When asked about the significance of hockey and its importance in the community, he simply responds, “It’s a passion.”

So far, Cooke and Sage have been thrilled with the recognition and traffic they’ve been able to generate. The website’s been in high demand, and Apartment613 isn’t the only media outlet that’s been giving them attention.

Cooke and Sage have plenty of plans about future expansion. They are a bit reluctant to reveal all of the cards up their sleeves, but they did say that they hope to expand to other Canadian NHL cities and also the CFL (once Ottawa has a team, of course).

In the meantime, Cooke says that there will be tickets available to every playoff game this year. In addition to the main site, you can check out Broker4Tickets on Facebook and Twitter.

Go Sens Go!

The National Capital Region loves hockey, so it’s no surprise that the local blogosphere is filled with blog posts about Canada’s national game. While the majority of online chatter focuses on the Ottawa Senators, there are blogs covering the Ottawa 67s, hockey-related humour and hockey stats. There is also an online forum for the Olympiques de Gatineau. So sit back and relax, as this week’s blogging round-up reveals where to get your hockey fix.

Ottawa Senators

Battle of Ontario is a blog where Leafs and Senators fans can yell at each other. OK, that’s not exactly true, as this site is really a discussion forum for both sides of the aisle. If you were to ask me, however, I would tell you that I love yelling at the Leafs … loudly.

Jeremy Milks is the creative force behind Black Aces, a blog that provides solid sports reporting with doses of humour. Jeremy also has this wonderful description of himself: “Starving Writer. Weak slapshot. Strong wrister. Mediocre skater. Champion beer gut.”

The 6th Sens was created and is edited by G. Nichols, with contributions from writers, “Tim, Scott and Swedish correspondent steffeG.” Besides having a great name and sense of humour, (on the front page there is an illustration of Alexandre Daigle in a nurse’s outfit with the words, “I see Daigle people”), it also contains a lot of Sens-related information.

Another blog is Silver Sevens, which is part of the online SB Sports network of web sites. Sens Chirp, meanwhile, started as a small blog by a dedicated fan that grew into a popular site for like-minded Sens fanatics. Other fan blogs include Sens Town, Sens Underground and Welcome To Your Karlsson Years.

Pour une perspective en français, il y a le blogue La Chambre Rouge du journaliste Sylvain St-Laurent du journal Le Droit. For English-language journalism, there is the blog Off The Posts from the Ottawa Sun, Senators Extra from the Ottawa Citizen, and Dean Brown’s blog from Team Radio 1200. My Sens City provides a forum and aggregate for blog posts, articles and news releases on the Senator.

Ottawa 67s and Olympiques du Gatineau

The Ottawa 67s have their own fan blog. While I didn’t find any blogs for the Olympiques de Gatineau, (this web site is not really a blog), I did come across a fan forum.

Hockey Humour / Statistics

Sean McIndoe is an Ottawa-based writer whose articles have appeared in the National Post, and who has written a book based on his hockey humour blog Down Goes Brown.

If you like hockey trivia, then the blog Liam Maguire’s Ultimate Hockey may interest you. According to a posted bio, Liam had stored a vast supply of hockey data by the age of ten. “The crowning glory of his youth took place in 1981,” reads the bio, “when he was invited as a guest on the Hal Anthony Talk Show on CFRA Radio in Ottawa. His destiny was, at that point, assured and he became the unofficial hockey trivia expert.”

Do you know of any other local hockey blogs? Let us know in the comments section below. In the meantime, if you want to know more about local bloggers you can link to The Ottawa Blogging Library, a new site that I recently created that contains blogging news not included in the Apt613 weekly blog round-up.

From February 8 to 10, 48 of the world’s best outdoor curlers (or at least 48 men who knew the event was taking place and were crazy enough to sign up), gathered at the Dalhousie Lake Curling Club for the 21st playing of the unofficial World Outdoor Curling Championships.

Calling The Lake a curling club is akin to calling your driveway the Daytona International Speedway. What it is, however, is a warmish building, an hour and change from Ottawa by car, that sits in front of a frozen body of water. And the snow is removed from that frozen body of water in three long lines on the second weekend in February every year.

What started as a six man event 21 years ago continues to gain momentum with a field as large as ever gathering at The Lake. While there are plenty of reasons why you should not curl outside in February (ice surfaces that change overnight, -25 degree temperatures, coyote infested forests and a lack of running water and electricity being chief among them) there are more reasons why this event succeeds.

The food is one primary draw. Each three hour block is sponsored by some artery clogging delicacy or another. Shepherd’s pie, beef brisket, steak, chilli, ballpark franks, bagelwiches, venison sausages and spicy pickled eggs are just a few of the treats that can be found at any one time.

The drinks are another part of the experience. A gas powered margarita-making-machine kicks off the event and while it’s to each their own in terms of what you bring up to consume, craft beers made their way into the array this year. Big Rig and Kichesippi were my personal blend of choice.

But mostly, it’s about getting a group of 48 guys who would otherwise never gather together, building three sheets of ice that couldn’t be more different from one another, and then letting that group go at it on a sunny Saturday filled, from sunup to sundown, with curling games. That’s what keeps us coming.

The teams, drawn at random using a deck of playing cards, are made up of two kinds of ‘athletes.’ On one side you have the ‘experienced curlers.’ Those guys that spends two or three days a week on indoor ice, where strategy means something and the ice conditions vary little.

“Should we throw the in turn or the out turn? Or should we hit and roll on top of theirs? We might leave them a little tap but then we’ll have our own rock to run back on our next shot.”

On the other side you have the ‘inexperienced curlers.’ The guys who spend their winter days on skidoos and at ice fishing shacks miles away from the indoor game.

“Should we haul this rock down the ice? Or should we really haul it down the ice?”

In almost 100 per cent of cases, the team with the fewest thinkers and the most chuckers comes out on top. This year’s event was once again dominated by the chuckers.

By Sunday afternoon, the skidoos, tents, wood stoves and cans had been removed from the lake, the only signs that curling had taken place being the long sheets of exposed ice. Inside the clubhouse, the winners were congratulated and plans were underway to make sure next year’s event is equally successful. For the most part, next year’s operation will remain the same. We’ll have the same ice crew, same number of curlers and the same clubhouse.

Although next year, there will be chicken wings.

A couple of weeks ago, we heard that the OSEG is contemplating the name Red Blacks for Ottawa’s future CFL team. However, it doesn’t look like residents support the proposition.

A recent Ottawa Citizen Internet survey asked readers if Ottawa Red Blacks is a good name for the city’s new CFL team? An overwhelming majority, 91%, disapproved. Over 3,700 participated in the survey. The Ottawa Sun also solicited its readership to see what they thought of the potential name. Similar results from the Citizen’s questionnaire emerged, with 82% disliking it. Roughly 1,800 surfers voted.

I have my own suggestion for OSEG, that it consider the name Red Pines for their future CFL team. Many great team names in pro sports are historically and culturally rich, like the Montréal Canadiens, Milwaukee Brewers, Texas Rangers and more. Red pines along with white pines were the major export during the Ottawa River timber trade in the 1800’s when it was still called Bytown. Both pines were abundant near the river. Ottawa and Gatineau benefited from the trade attracting numerous workers and settlers.

Considering both sides of the river is important since the future franchise needs to include Quebecers to maximize their pool of fans. In recent years, football has gained quite a bit in popularity in Québec. Besides, the translation works: Les Pins Rouges d’Ottawa.

The name Red Pines also answers Jeff Hunt’s wish for the name to start with an ‘R’ – it’s a question of tradition. With this name the squad could also don red uniforms, a colour used by many former and active Ottawa teams – the Senators, the 67′s, the Renegades and Capital City Football Club.

As for the symbolism of the name, red pines are strong and tall. Because of their deep and widespread roots, they can stand firm against strong winds, representative of an ideal defensive line. Furthermore, they grow and thrive in many types of terrain including, sandy and rocky. This sense of resiliency also translates well to the gridiron.

For those feeling Red Pines isn’t a good name for a football team because trees are immobile, what about J. R. R. Tolkien’s Ents? These large giant trees, from Lord of the Rings, marched to Isengard and successfully destroyed Saruman’s army production facilities during the Last March of the Ents. If that doesn’t have you convinced, Jeff Hunt, then I don’t know what will.

Let us know what you think of the name Red Pines in our comments section. Got a better name? Let us know!

The NHL lockout is finally over and the Sens, like many other teams, have promo-galore to entice fans back to Scotiabank Place. “Among the offerings to the fans is free parking on opening night, free admission to kids 14 years of age and younger in four of the first 10 home games, $1 popcorn and pop in seven of the first 10 games and half price merchandise up until the end of opening night at home.” Will the love of the game, or the special treats see you go back and support the Sens?

Our thoughts are with Councillor Stephen Blais who’s currently recovering from a heart attack suffered last week. Because there is no ‘acting councillor’ position, councillors from neighboring areas are stepping up on certain files in Blais’ Cumberland ward. No matter what, the people of Cumberland won’t have a vote at city council as long as Blais remains their councillor but out of action, so let’s hope for a speedy recovery.

With one of the worst flu seasons hitting Ottawa, the city has decided to re-open 3 flu clinics. The first of three one-day flu clinics will be held on Jan. 14 at Holy Trinity Catholic High School in Kanata from 3:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The second clinic will be held on Jan. 17 at Sir Wilfrid Laurier Secondary School in Orleans from 3:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The third clinic will be held Jan. 19 at a City of Ottawa facility from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at 100 Constellation Dr. in Nepean.

Minto Group, who’s looking to purchase the empty land where a Home Hardware and 11 other businesess burnt in 2011, has filed its building plans for the space. An artist rendering shows an 9-storey condo tower with business at the bottom. One of the businesses that was saved from the fire – Bread & Roses Bakery – will be forced to move to a new location. Its new address will be 323 St.Laurent Blvd. This is bittersweet for owner Chris Green who did not want to move but this will keep his store in the community while also allowing him expand the business near the soon-to-be developed Rockliffe Airbase. A public meeting is set for Jan. 16 at 7 p.m. at Memorial Hall, 39 Dufferin Rd. to discuss the new proposed building.

On Saturday, October 20, 2012, some of the heaviest weights in Ottawa’s DJ and boxing scenes are going to be under one roof and in the same ring – for one heck of a good cause. The Beaver Boxing Club is hosting its first DJ battle and dance party featuring TIMEKODE vs. CEREMONY, in support of the Boys and Girls Club of Ottawa. You heard that right, and you know what these guys are capable of, so start stretching now, folks, ‘cuz this is going to be one great party. Everything gets going at 9pm, and at midnight the DJs will go round for round ten minutes at a time – giving themselves the grounds to showcase what makes their respective parties really unique.

Apt613 recently dropped by Beaver Boxing Club to chat with the organizers and DJ Zattar of TIMEKODE, and quickly got to talking about the club, the cause, the dignity in a fun, fair fight/match. We learned that while Beaver Boxing Club has been an Ottawa boxing institution for decades now, and since its resettlement in Little Italy almost two years ago it’s clearly breathing new life into the community, and vice versa. Check out the full interview in the Apartment613 Live podcast from this week (posted soon!).

The ladies from the club emphasized the strong youth presence and longstanding relationship the club has had with the Boys and Girls Club of Ottawa, and how the two organizations work together to create safe, fun activities and training for everyone. They explained that due to their similar vision, they have often held fundraisers for the Boys and Girls Club, but holding this kind of party is definitely a first.

DJ Zattar expressed his sincere appreciation for the role the club is playing to infuse life into and contribute to the development of the neighborhood and particularly local youth. He spoke candidly about the positive changes he’s witnessed in the area since he lived in this area several years ago, and on behalf of both DJ crews he expressed their pleasure to be involved with such a good cause – but he assured us he’s not going to go easy on the CEREMONY crew.

We also had a first-hand look at local heavies Jamie and Randy demonstrating their speed, skills, and maturity in an incredible round of sparring, to which my camera could hardly keep up with.

Organizers are going to be decking the place out by pretty much leaving it exactly as it is – an undeniably authentic boxing club – and adding all sorts party fixings, including a well-stocked bar, and a hundred watts of bass to run through your veins. Local fashion/style photographer Dan Ziemkiewicz will also be on hand, selling photos of your favourite Beaver Boxing members.

If you’re unaware, both DJ camps are made up of some of the most talented and progressive musicians in town. They each put on amazing monthly parties, and their styles and mixes run amuck with all sorts of wild foreign and domestic influences which inherently shake, rattle, n’ roll, so get ready to party!

Here’s how they match-up:

In the blue corner you’ll find the tried, tested, n’ true TIMEKODE crew represented by DJs Zattar, Eric Roberts, and Memetic, weighing in with almost 7 years of experience bringing soul to Ottawa’s soles with one of the most original and popular monthly parties in town. These guys know exactly how to get you moving to their unique blend of vintage afro/funk/soul, and there’s no doubt they’ll be coming on strong.

In the red corner, the ‘underdogs’ from CEREMONY are quickly proving their bark has bite, weighing in as one of the heaviest and most seductive monthly event in town. While having only been on the scene for the last year, the infamous lineup of Adam Saikaley, Gary Franks, and … aherm…Eric Roberts know the game inside ‘n’ out, and already have the following to prove it. They’re also probably the first to admit they play dirty, so we’ll be keeping an eye on them to ensure everything goes down fair n’ square.

But don’t listen to me, come and decide for yourself!

This fight goes down at Beaver Boxing, 145 Spruce Street (west of Preston, north of Somerset), Saturday October 20th; doors open at 9 pm. Tickets $5 at the door. Cash Bar only (no ATM on site); coat check. 19 + event

Thanks to Jamie, Randy, Jasmine Lefebvre, Amanda Elliott, Iman Al, Michael Bhardwhaj and Jill Perry for making the interview and the photoshoot possible!

Want to have some summer fun, but are pinching your pennies to feed your daily gelato habit? The following list of free or very cheap outdoor activities is a work in progress by Fiona Marshall. Fiona is working on the list for the Money Skills workshops offered by the Canadian Mental Health Association to people with severe and persistent mental health issues, a program sponsored by the TD Financial Literacy Fund.

Help out Fiona (and your fellow cheapskates) by suggesting free or cheap recreational activities that we may have missed in the comments!

PICKUP SPORTS: FRIENDLY GAMES THAT ARE CASUALLY ORGANIZED AND COST NOTHING!

There are numerous soccer, basketball, ultimate frisbee, and football pick-up games throughout the city. All it takes is the initiative to ask if a game is a league game or a pick-up game and if you can join.

We have included a sampling of pick-up games around town:

Soccer

The Ontario Soccer Association’s (OSA) Soccer and Settlement project runs several soccer programs in different communities across Ottawa.
Held on the last Sunday before Canada Day, the Community Cup is a day-long event designed to engage the community and reduce isolation and challenges faced by many newcomers. It is recreational co-ed soccer tournament bridging and connecting cultures, ethnicities, and generations. More info: www.communitycup.ca.
Geocaching

Geocaching is a high-tech treasure hunting game. Serious geocachers will probably want to use a GPS unit, which can be pricey, but if you have a smartphone there are many geocaching apps you can download for pennies (some are even free). They’ll do the trick if you’re just after an afternoon of fun! The pastime involves using GPS coordinates to find hidden containers, called geocaches, and then logging your finds online. The containers contain a logbook for you to sign, and sometimes a small, inexpensive prize. Each time you take something from a geocache, you should leave something behind for the next person. Geocache coordinates can be found at a number of websites, the most prominent one being www.geocaching.com. Basic membership to geocaching.com is free and lets you search for nearby geocaches using your postal code.
