Ottawa Fashion Week is almost upon us. The event is building on the success of the fall edition, its biggest yet. Spring fashion weeks are generally smaller in nature than their fall/winter counterparts, but I’m really excited to see the 17 designers showing at the Westin Hotel’s Governor General Ballroom. Designers like frAsh jewelry, DeMoyo, Montreal’s !Nu.I, Jana Hanzel & Emilia Torabi and Rachel Sin return. Expect to find lots of elegant, ready to wear fashions from Amanda Emmanuel and Turbine with edgier streetwear from folks like Y!D.N.A COLLECTION. Folks... | Continue reading article
Those big wedding shows always promise the perfect, unique day. But can those vendors really know what unique twists and turns you’ll want to bring to your special day? What if you want handmade chocolates? Or a truly one-of-a-kind ring? And how can you reduce the stress of planning it all? This is where Wed By Hand comes in – Ottawa’s wedding show that’s like no other. Sure, they have some of the usual trappings of weddings shows, but with a twist: it’s vegan cake you’ll be sampling, local flowers... | Continue reading article

Photos courtesy Ming Wu. Created with Admarket’s flickrSLiDR. We stopped by the Ottawa Convention Centre last night to catch the first evening of Ottawa Fashion Week. Check out our Storify-ed version of the events below (yup, it’s long – we love us some fashion) and catch photos of all of the designers’ fashions over at our friend Ming Wu’s blog. I have a confession to make. Watching Project Runway is my guilty pleasure. At first when my girlfriend watched, I sort of squirmed and looked away, but for the last 3 years, I’ve been hooked and can’t look away anymore. So I always get excited when the chance comes twice a year to be by the runway in real life when Ottawa Fashion Week comes along.
We walk by shop window displays every day – some are bland, some are catchy, and some we don’t even bother to look at. What if we, the citizens of this fine city, were given the power to hop behind those store windows and put up a creative display? Thankfully, we have Malorie and Maureen from Fashion on Display to make this happen for us. Fashion on Display brings together local shops, artists, designers and you, happy shopper – with this mixture of Ottawans, they produce not just snazzy window... | Continue reading article
The time has come to make your vote count once again. We got a great response for our call for designs in our first-ever t-shirt contest (we’d like to thank everyone who submitted a design), and the editors of Apt613 had a hard time narrowing down the submissions to the top 10. Now it’s up to you to decide which three designs will get printed. The top three designers will be featured on Apt613 and will receive a cash prize: $100 for third place, $200 for second, and $300 for... | Continue reading article
The people behind ByWard Market fashion innovators Schad (and SchadBlü) are bringing a new shoe store to Ottawa later this summer. Wolf & Zed is scheduled to open on Sussex the weekend of Aug 8-9. Having spent a good part of the last 24 hours debating if I should keep the olive green Tory Burch flats I’d just purchased on sale at Holt Renfrew – and subjecting my colleagues to more flip-flopping than I care to admit – I’m particularly excited about this news. (I finally decided to return them,... | Continue reading article

Thespians are known for their attention grabbing ways, but does their flare for the dramatic extend to the wardrobe? Melanie Yugo, crafter extraordinaire and co-founder of Spins & Needles, and Lauryn Kronick, a vintage-obsessed fashion junkie, were on hand at the 2011 Fringe Festival to find out. While the festival ended last week, we hope that some of the styles that made their way to the famous fringe beer tent last all summer long.
