The Rideau Canal opens for skating today—01.05.18

By Greggory Clark on January 5, 2018

Given the severely low temperatures inflicted on Ottawa lately, some were left wondering how many more days could pass before The Rideau Canal Skateway would finally open.

A 5-kilometre section (out of 7.8km) will open at 8am today, January 5, between the Bronson rest area and Pretoria Bridge. That includes all of Dows Lake.

Dress warmly, because Ottawa Public Health has issued a frostbite warning. Temperatures will drop to the minus thirties overnight and the daytime high of –21°C is forecasted.

The National Capital Commission estimates, on average, about one million visits to the Rideau Canal every winter.
