Matias is a music blogger at Ottawa Showbox as well as one of the organizers of the ’4in1′ Acoustic Sessions.

Earlier this year, it was decided that a series of acoustic sessions was needed in order to give a platform to artists in Ottawa’s blossoming music scene. No, the purpose was not to make money or promise fame and fortune to participants. The object is to give musicians an outlet to try out some new things, play some new (and old) material, and bring more people into this growing community of music lovers.

The ‘4in1’ Acoustic Sessions started in the spring of 2012 with these goals in mind. The brainchild of avid concertgoer and music photographer Ming Wu, another twist was thrown into the mix: make the sessions outdoors, in natural spaces within our city. ‘4in1’ has taken place in beautiful spaces such as Dundonald Park, Strathcona Park, Westboro Beach, Rideau Canal Locks, just to name a few. Some of Ottawa’s best musicians have played their repertoire in this stripped-down acoustic setting, providing an interesting challenge for them. But new or lesser known artists have also astonished audiences, uncovering some of the hidden talent and creativity this city has to offer.

Now that the seasons have changed, Ming has teamed up with Matias of Ottawa Showbox and a small posse of equally passionate individuals to make ‘4in1’ a permanent, year-round institution in Ottawa. With the first indoor session taking place at Antique Skate Shop a huge success, the December 16th session at Carleton’s Architecture Building (“The Pit”) promises to be even bigger, even louder, and filled with fun. This month’s gathering will also be a plugged in affair – just to mix things up.

There are prizes from Bridgehead, Lush, Milk, Auntie Loo’s, and an even better chance to win if you wear your ugly holiday sweater. We’re also collecting non-perishable food donations for the Ottawa Food Bank, so please bring anything you can to help out this year. So if you’ve heard of the ‘4in1’ Music Sessions, make the trip out and experience this event that transport you directly into the best that Ottawa’s music scene has to offer.
